10 Euros entry fee for Venice

News

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-46721456

I have not visited Venice, and nor have I ever really wanted to, as I have heard it is expensive. And now with the additional fee, I doubt I ever will

Have you ever been?

Hi hspexy I've never been to Venice it's a place I've never want to go. Like you said it's a very dear place. This is what they want to do here in Scotland is charge holiday people. I think it's all wrong. We need the holiday people. And this will just put people of coming. Hotels b & b.s. would all shut down. People out of jobs. And I can see this all so happening in Venice. I think this world has gone crazy. It's now all money money. Things that were free are no longer free. I would love to talk to the people who through this up. They have no Ida what will happening. All the think about now is money and were to get it from. They are not thinking about the people. Like we need jobs. 🦉🦉

I agree. It seems like the people who decide upon these things never really go on normal holidays themselves, so it doesn't matter if they charge high prices as it'll never affect them. Entry fees for tourist hotspots ought to be cheaper, as that'll encourage football, which in turn means revenue for other things like gifts, souvenirs and food. You also want to encourage them to recommend other people to visit as well, as they certainly won't do that if everything costs too much

I watched something about Venice on TV once and did not realise the impact that every ship or plane load of tourists is having on the city. I won't go into details here but the city 'floats' mostly and the cost of keeping it up to scratch plus the extra burden of tourism (although good for tradespeople) is hefty. However, I agree with Nicola, you can't just solve these problems by charging people more and more money. Governments need to sort these issues.

On a slightly different subject I have always been angry at the fact that born and bred Brits have to pay the same as tourists to visit their heritage like Tower of London, stately homes, etc. These places are our inheritance and I think if you can show a passport, driving licence or whatever to prove your place of birth you should pay a reduced entry fee.

there's a lot of countries in Asia where they do separate prices - one for locals and one for tourists, and the former is significantly cheaper than the latter. Like you, I think it should be done here as well, as I would never visit some of these places if I wasn't going to get a discount for entry. Upkeep is expensive for most places, but by raising entry costs, it certainly makes even less people want to visit, which in turn means less and less footfall

We went there with my husband once. It is wonderful. Venice is much more bigger than just the side on the water, so stay on the less nice side is cheaper and u can take a bus there which is cheap and walk around or get the water service. I loved the place and I do not think so they should charge for this! It should be free and other things cheaper, that more people could visit this place.

If u go there visit Murano too.....

hspexy before the fee takes place....10 Euro is not much money to see something like Venice, but I have this ideology myself, that I do not pay for certain places to go to....like Catholic Church....I am Catholic, so why would I pay anything to go to a religious place and yep....there are so many Church charge money and there is one in Venice too...so how can they charge for practicing religion? Or just get to the Church?

When they charge entrance to places like I just loose my belief left. This city is part of history, has rich culture, art and religion and if they charge means less people can access it, even more people should go there instead to open their minds and learn... It is disappointing, that nowadays the rich people can not control them self and push the poor to stupidity.

AgnesFaludi indeed. In a lot of Asian countries I have visited , the fees they charge are not that high, and very cheap for locals, so they can enjoy their time and learn about history, art, conservation, etc. They ought to do that here, as footfall will keep things afloat, and people will get out and about more

Venice is overrated. Over-priced and I would say Rome and even Pisa for that matter are better cities to visit. Go to Naples for the REAL ITALIAN Pizzas. Genoa has a great aquarium there. Stay in La Spezia (visit Cinique Terre). You have done your Italy. But of all i visited Venice impressed me the least.

cheers for the heads up. Most people have told me the same, so that is why I have yet to bother with these places. I have only been to Lake Garda, which I thought was beautiful, and Sardinia. I don't fancy travelling to crowded, tourist laden places

"It is expected to be set at €2.50 to €5 per person, but at peak times in the summer it could rise to €10. Venice plans to have the tax in place for the 2019 high season."

Rome is indeed lovely but also very expensive. not much in pisa though but it is only a few miles from Florence which is lovely and not too expensive either. both are really worth a visit

If you're only going to visit once €10 doesn't sound too bad. It wouldn't put me off going there 🚣
