2nd Hand Stuff for Babies or Not?
Ask a Question
My brother says its not good for kids to have secound hand stuff as they can pick allergies but I think babies grow so fast and spending money on moses baskets etc is just a waste as babies only use them for few weeks.
We always can buy new coners of baskets and cribs to avoid any possible hygienic problems.
What do you think?
Ive bought second hand and ive never had any problems. Always clean things and wash fabrics before use though.
Babys & toddlers grow so quickly that second hand stuff is most often in very good condition. As long as its washed / sterilized before use then wont be a problem. Kinder on the purse too.
I sold on a lot of baby things that were immaculate and hardly used. Someone bought loads of stuff for a fraction of what it cost new and it was practically untouched. My second baby got a lot of things that had been passed around from cousin to cousin and still in perfect condition.
My son has a number of second hand clothes and toys and a 2nd hand high chair at his grandparents, he was born with a complex heart condition, none of his 2nd hand stuff has caused him any issues and we had to be super careful. As long as things are washed or sterilised properly there is no issue. The only advice I would give is to always buy a new mattress for a cotbed, moses basket or carrycot. All my sons stuff is being given to a local baby charity to be passed on to people who are struggling. Second hand stuff saves you a ton of money.
WindowShopper thank you. He has had his operation and his cardiologist is happy with his progress. He is our wee miracle and a ray of sunshine.
All 4 of mine have had second hand only thing new was the bottles and sterizer my 3rd had a beautiful bouncy silver Cross from local charity shop for a bargain price of £2 because only had the carry cot part not the seat for when older but from 6 months I put them in buggy anyway
It is definitely personal preference but it is completely fine if that’s what you choose to do. Just like others have said, most of the things people sell on are nearly used and practically new anyway. I would always buy a new mattress for a Moses basket or cot. The only thing I would definitely avoid would be a car seat unless you can be sure it has never been in an accident, not worth the risk
I agree with you guys babies grow so fast and if we can save some money we again will spend on them may be for a holiday etc
I absolutely agree. money is tight enough without buying everything brand new all of the time. Even with my first I was quite savvy and bought certain things new such as bedding, but the cot was second hand and immaculate. I realised that moses baskets are ten a penny on the internet and charity shops, as well as lots being given away as well. Like a lot on here have said, kids grow up so fast and certainly baby things are outgrown incredibly quickly without being used hardly at all. Being a lover of charity shops and a bargain ,I always found great satisfaction in getting something I knew someone else had paid a small fortune for, for very little indeed. On a tenuous link, I myself wear a good deal of 'nearly new' clothes ( for the people who are sniffy at the term 2nd hand) and love a bargain. I think we can all take a leaf out of our Grandparents book of 'make do and mend' a little especially at this time of year and with the uncertainty of brexit etc.
As long as things are washed and in good condition it wouldn't bother me. Like you say they grow so quick. Half the time second hand in charity shops or boot sales the clothes have been worn once if that
I must admit I never dressed my children in second hand clothing but nowadays it’s good to reuse and recycle kids clothing.
There are some lovely charity shops especially for children's clothes and toys, my sister uses them for her daughter. She found John Lewis baby grows for 50p. You're meant to wash everything before the baby wears or uses so i dont see an issue
All of mine only had second hand except the cot mattress. I think his comment is the very definition of a throw away culture.
My son had on a pair of jeans today that used to belong to the son of a friend of his granny. They were practically brand new and are really good quality. When he is finished with them (as long as there is wear left in them) they will be passed on, so will become 3rd hand!
Nothing wrong with some second hand stuff. My cousin lost her job on boxing day and knew for a while she was losing her job. She had saved throughout the year and bought stuff in the sales and even bought her daughters presents out of charity shops for xmas as she didnt want little one to wake up xmas day without a present. No shame in buying second hand sometimes its same as new but cheaper.
Someone I know just got a blanket for their baby that's been passed down a couple of times and used on several babies. Surprised it's still in one piece!
It’s natural for most parents to want new things for their first child, but you do realise the spending never ends and will eventually understand the need to get hand me downs. Hygiene is no issue - the baby will do many things that will help you relax your high standards after a while, particularly if you’re sleep deprived
Being on here and other deal hunting sites, I'd just want to save as much as I could to not waste money - never pay full price so happy to be given second hand stuff - babies won't know anyway!
I think clothes are ok but not shoes as they are shaped to someone elses feet which can cause problems for a baby. I don’t think baskets and cribs are ok as long as you get a new mattress and bedding
