50% of 10-Year-Olds in the UK Owned a Smartphone in 2019

Seems too young, maybe. I'd certainly not be buying them an expensive one. Partly to save me money, partly so they're not constantly glued to it (like me).

It’s far to young. What happened to children playing with toys. I bet most children can’t ride bikes these days

A 10 year old doesn't need a phone.

My nephew is 11 and he has an iPhone. I don’t really think it is necessary but he is starting ‘big’ school this year and he is a very active young lad interested in cricket and football. I don‘t see any harm in him having the phone as it doesn’t stop him from being his normal active self but I guess it could be different with other children!

I've seen even younger kids with iphones and some premium android phones, some parents spend a lot of money on their kid's phones or give them expensive hand me down phones. Considering they will probably have a stronger chance of breaking them or losing them I'd probably give them a fairly basic phone or even non-smartphone so they can make important calls but not much else. When I was a kid, kids got ridiculed and laughed for having the wrong stuff. I remember a kid who had a very worn out dated bicycle that he rode to school so he was looked down on and I remember in the news, stories about kids who couldn't afford the right brand trainers were scorned it had to be Nike etc. I suspect smartphone ranking goes on at school.
