£500 Vouchers for All UK Adults to Spend in Covid-Hit Firms

In the News

Seen this reported from multiple sources.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/jul/05/sunak-considers-500-vouchers-for-all-uk-adults-to-spend-in-covid-hit-firms

In Summary -

"Radical plans to give all adults £500 and children £250 in vouchers to spend in sectors of the economy worst hit by the Covid-19 crisis are being considered by the Treasury.

The proposals, drawn up by the Resolution Foundation thinktank, which has had recent talks with the Treasury about its ideas, are aimed at kickstarting economic recovery by triggering a highly targeted surge in spending. Under the plans the vouchers could only be spent in certain sectors, such as hospitality and “face to face” retail, as opposed to online."

What are peoples thoughts?

I think it's not a bad idea. It would give physical retailers a boost, and it would certainly give the general public a boost.

When they say all....It is never all...the middle class get nothing...

The idea is idealistic....May used to say there is no magic money tree....Now we have one?????

And we all know how the story will end...tax will rise and we pay it back with interest.

It's a waste of time. This government never backed me as as Ltd Director. I have now lost faith in Boris, who I used to respect a lot. To be fair they are all as bad as each other.

I think the Green Deal from Rishi, who will say more tomorrow in the House of Commons, will again not help every household. I live in a new, modern built house so any insulation is no use to me. My spec is above the building regs code already.

True, but the country, and nearly every other country on earth, are going to be in debt for years if not decades to come.

And if the money is going to go to businesses to help them anyway then this seems like as good a way to do it as any.

This. 500 quid to spend is nothing. Just like the US Stimulus check that many people did not receive and somehow the government thinks it's helping a lot and no further help is necessary.

I understand the idea of giving back to businesses and all, however just like everything else businesses do not operate only for a month...

Governments do not produce wealth, all the money comes from taxpayers, so the magic of the communists will never happen.

Oh dear but who will decide where the vouchers can be spent? I can’t see this working lots of smaller shops might not be included.

It will be same as with furlough...not thought through...how come all companies were allowed to claim? Regardless of their size, sales, how many staff they employ? Huge companies worth millions were allowed to put staff on furlough on same terms as small businesses who really needed it... so how this will work?...unless they think through everything it will be another scheme to bump up only big guys...

Who decides where you spend it? Will arseholes like wetherspoons, sports direct and virgin be excluded from the program? Whats the criteria to be eligible? If this come in, i can see myself not getting them because i work full time.

What is the problem with Virgin? People are confusing the major shareholder of the company with the company itself.

bzortead Same as sports direct and wetherspoons, all owners are complete bell-ends and couldn't give a **** about their staff.

Getsome I am sure all the others do, including the small shops.😎

Just for information, several sites such as Glassdoor, classify Virgin Atlantic as a great company to work for. (Employees' opinion)

Getsome The airlines were the most affected by the pandemic, there is no magic. All of these companies are listed on the stock exchange, so there are millions of investors waiting for results, it is not a family business where the owner can decide to open the wallet and put money out of his own pocket.

Getsome Because these two companies made employees work during the furlough, they pay ridiculous wages, often below the legal minimum using cheating. They use all kinds of strategies to get the most out of employees while saving everything possible.

The scolding with Virgin Atlantic is by the founder who does not pay taxes in the UK, and not by the company itself, which pays taxes here and employs more than 10k people.

I like the idea I had thought it was cash but people would not necessarily spend it yet. I'm sure I could think of a few things I could buy. Some how don't think it will happen though

This is just Pie In The Sky rhetoric, means nothing! They are still blocking people from Universal Credit where I stay and cutting child care costs!! I'll believe it when I've got it in my sweaty mitts!)0

I think if (and it's a big if) it actually happens, they need to stipulate that only a portion of it (say £200) can be spent in retailers that are large - I'm thinking Tesco, Sports Direct etc.

And maybe at least £100 of it needs to be spent in the hospitality sector.

I think the vouchers will be from retailers who want to be involved in the scheme and will be in the form of a booklet. For example, 15% off a booking at Travelodge, buy one get one free at Pizza Hut etc. I don’t think the vouchers will have a monetary value to the individual, they will be an incentive to use a service or company.

maybe would be a good idea to give it to those who have been working through the pandemic and haven't taken money from the government (ie been furlonged) just a thought as we dont get enough recognition for risking our lives every day during the pandemic

Yeah not quite the £500 the think tank suggested.

So I wonder what happens to that Independent book shop that's been struggling, or that shoe shop that isn't part of a large chain?

Already people are saying it's half price at Nandos, which is a chain.

I think they've really missed an opportunity here to help small, independent shops, cafes and restaurants.
