Over 60s Housing Complex - What Do You Think?

Ask a Question

Housing complexes for over 60s seem to be the new thing is our area as new one seem to keep popping up. What do you think about them? Are they popular in your area? We looked round one and it looked very well planned out and nicely finished, but the prices were crazy for the size of the houses, so it would be out of the realms of possibility for us.

There is one that has just been approved by the Planning department in my town that is about to be built.

In principle I think they are rather a good idea, if executed well. The plans I reviewed recently incorporated cafes, hairdressers, entertainment etc... But everything has a price and these properties do not come cheap. As a retirement option I really like the 'community' idea.

Part of me thinks we should have more integration housing options for for all ages, but that would not be for everyone either. I have lived in areas that have had much older neighbours and I personally prefer it.

We’ve had several small flat developments for the over 55s build around here but the cost it much higher than the usual 2 bed flats plus their maintenance fees are exuberant. The local council had lots of complaints because our area really needs starter homes but the argument was that folk will sell their current houses to move to the elderly flats but they are selling large homes and downsizing to these flats. I know a couple who sold a large 4 bedroom with 3 bathrooms to move to one of these flats. The elderly are being ripped off.

We have a few around where i live. Mainly for ages 55 and above. I quite like the idea and it probably stops older (not that 55/60 is old!) getting quite so lonely.
