Should We Be Actively Avoiding Using AI Services?

Big companies are pushing AI services, they have invested hugely into AI but as consumers it is causing huge hyper inflation for computer related products and ultimately AI is likely to cause huge damage to the economies of the world and the environment. The environment due to the huge power demands and the huge amount of resources going into manufacturing AI infrastructure.
I'm seeing more and more requests for me to upgrade to AI or make use of AI technology. Should we all be focused on avoiding paying for AI in order for AI to slowdown or even fail?
There are some sectors where AI is important and hugely beneficial but a lot of AI use is trivial and not important just a minor enhancement.
Do you pay for AI services?
No I don’t pay for an AI service nor used one. However, my husband used an AI service, assumed it was free and he was very impressed with the formal letter produced.
I do my best to avoid it, but it's hard as google have it built in. Several times I've had to use an AI chatbot as there was no alterative. My concern is it taking away customer service jobs, fast food jobs, creative jobs, etc. No one asked for this and it's just forced on us. I certainly am not paying to use it.
To be honest there is so much fakery around I think it should be primarily for research etc. I saw a post on facebook the other day, totally serious, showing a pic of a group of armed police supposedly going to arrest a 14 year old girl. On closer inspection it turned out to be a still photo of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in Hot Fuzz. People were posting comments thinking it was real. Goodness knows what they would make of an AI post. Maybe it should be an offence not to state when something is AI.
Lynibis I do agree AI videos, images, text and other AI creations should be clearly marked but that is the point many are using AI and claiming it for themselves. There has been a few news stories where people have used AI and not told others they have done so only to be found out. There was that recent suicide of someone who was found out although at this point I can't remember if it was true that he had used AI or not. We are moving into very complicated dangerous times as criminals are using AI too with great success.
It feels like for every 1 positive there are 3 negatives about AI.
I think we should be avoiding using Ai for the reasons you outlined and also because it will replace humans in certain job sectors and so that will not be good for a lot of people. We don't need the big corps to have more power than they already do, look how apple, amazon etc act right now. With Ai as well they will be even worse and we will see a step backwards in human and worker rights.
Like a lot of internet tools AI can be used for bad and can cause issues but it can also be very useful indeed and save a lot of time. I do pay for Google Pro - after I got a free year when I purchased my last phone and have extended it as it was useful (and also for the other extras that came with it, like a lot of extra online storage. I do agree that any video produced using AI should be clearly identified as such as they are getting really good and it can be hard to tell them apart these days and it is only going to get better.
AI has good and important uses. However it shouldn't be used for everything. Id like the option to look something up online without ai.
I resent being forced into using it
Imnotcheap I'm often surprised how AI can give dramatically different answers with just a tiny change of the search criteria. It's like the rewrote text from one web site the first time but the second time I changed a few words their response was the complete opposite as they had then used a different sites answers instead. It's like one site had right wing opinions and the other site left wing opinions so the results changed dramatically. I've also had answers re-written from US sites which were completely useless and not relevant to me but being more careful with my search criteria I got a much better UK based answer that was usable. My Amazon speaker now is moron level. I don't pay for the enhancements and don't have prime so my Amazon speaker is pretty much retarded now, it can't answer a lot of simple questions and many of the answers are US based and useless to me.
I'm not the sort of person that would pay for prime, I hate all these subscription payments and want to minimise as much as possible the money I send to Amazon which does huge damage to the UK economy.
I was against AI but there's some job "homework" I've got to do so having the AI do it for me just makes it easier.
AI has it's uses of course and generally does it's job very well but it seeks to subvert and supercede natural talent and ability. As a musician and an occasional writer I find it fearful aka what takes a writer soul ,dedication and time to create the bot does for a talentless someone in minutes. I love that in Australia they wont allow AI music into the charts. Like most people I watch AI generated stuff some of which is quite enjoyable but I think that it should always be labelled as such.
Well it's here to stay, so we better get use to it, I don't and don't want anything to do with Ai personally, at the end of the day, Ai is just a way of cutting jobs ect... So the elite & big companies make more profit, and of course military benefits
martinlufc5637 I'm sure it is here to stay but as consumers we can limit how much we use it and pay for it. Many of these AI companies are expecting us to pay 10s if not 100s of pounds a month on AI services and they are expecting commercial companies to pay even larger sums of money.
Their predictions for revenue are through the roof and the UK certainly can't afford it as is the situation for many other countries. Such costs would hugely damage many economies but I'm personally not confident these revenues are realistic at all. Also if they sell AI services to replace normal staff then those staff members are out of work and claiming benefits a further drain on the economy. At some point the government will realise they can't afford AI services as too disruptive.

No, I don’t use AI for personal things & I generally refuse to use it for work, but many services are looking to automate a lot of the admin, so AI has been adopted - just means more jobs hone in the long run
Judges got infuriated when lawyers used AI, but when it's the other way around it's fine... Double standard.
PhilipMarc These sort of stories make me feel uncomfortable. AI isn't perfect and I can see it leading to complications in law. In 10 years time AI will be so intelligent that I might struggle to interact with it. What is the point of training for years to get a highly skilled and highly paid job if you can just use AI and don't need any training.
BonzoBanana Yes, it can make humans unfortunately unemployable as they'll just use AI for the correct answers.
