ADHD Combined Type

After years of struggling in social situations, noisy environments and even finding a recipe difficult to follow despite being particularly bright, our granddaughter has been diagnosed with 'Combined Type ADHD - Inattentive & Hyperactive'. She also had an Autism test but the results are to follow.
Are any of your family or friends diagnosed with similar and do you have any tips to assist them?
My 3 nephews have autism and my little one is going through the process now she's bright funny but I've always known something wasn't quite right
Leannexxx It has taken my daughter years to finally get an assessment as our granddaughter was good at hiding her struggles at school in particular. She's always done well at school. However, now she's in her teens, life has become a struggle for her. She interrupts conversations, has sayings or words that she keeps repeating and gets stuck on a particular topic and it becomes her world, and finds friendships hard (if she thinks someone is in the wrong, she can be quite unforgiving!)

AlysonC well I'm pretty lucky because I would record her and her doctor and nursery referred her to the pediatrician she's started school in September and her teacher noticed something wasn't right either so hopefully I'll know something soon I just don't like the fact I've taken her to all appointments now I've got to wait for a group of people to make a decision on her without my input and I'll get a letter in the next few months to see what the outcome is
I’ve never been tested, nor have reasons to do so. But I did meet someone who is in her 40s that only recently got diagnosed & is on medication for it. I don’t know her that well, but she seems to think it’s helped her & can’t believe how long she lived without being diagnosed previously, so she’s relieved she is sorting it out now
hspexy Interesting. When I read some of the signs of ADHD I began to wonder if my daughter, has strong signs although not as clear as her daughter, nor does it interfere so badly with everyday life.
I guess that whether any medication could help will depend on the results of our granddaughters test for autism as this would make things much more complex.
No one in my family has any diagnosis like that.
However I work with people with similar problems.
Avoiding too much stimulation and not expecting them to think on their feet helps

Imnotcheap Thank you. Unfortunately, as she has the mixed diagnosis, she's in a 'push-pull' situation. She's frequently looking for things to stimulate her, but then becomes overwhelmed.
She's still waiting for her Autism assessment outcome, but is still processing her ADHD diagnosis. At the moment, she doesn't want to take medication which could really help with concentration as I think that she feels that it will change her personality, but we're trying to convince her that she would find a benefit particularly at school in this most important year.
AlysonC maybe if she tried the medication for a time agreed on with doctors to see the effect and she has the choice to stop if it does change her personality. We never notice personality change just calmer happier less destructive behaviour.
Lots of clients at work love colouring its a little stimulating but not overwhelming
Imnotcheap A teacher picked up her need to draw during maths lessons to help her concentrate and gave her a note pad, but another said that she wasn't allowed to draw during a lesson, "So that she can concentrate", so she would come home having scribbled on her arms and legs. Some people have no idea.
