In the News

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-52367030

good news for those who have their car insurance with Admiral - they will be giving a £25 refund to customers whilst their cars and vans sit idle during the coronavirus pandemic.

The payment will be paid automatically to anyone with a car or van insurance policy with Admiral on 20 April

Other insurers are under pressure to follow suit

Any rebates or refunds during these times are welcomed

Had email this morning we have 2 cars with them

Thank you

for staying at home

People like you are helping to save lives by staying at home. In recognition of this, we’re refunding £110 million to our car and van customers.

With fewer cars on the roads during the UK lockdown, we’re seeing a reduction in the number of claims coming in. We want to give the money we would’ve used to pay these claims back to our loyal customers in this difficult time.

If your car or van is one of the 4.4 million vehicles insured with us on 20 April 2020, you’ll get an automatic £25 refund per vehicle.

You don’t need to contact us or do anything at all at this stage, we’ll be in touch between now and the end of May with more details about the refund.

If you have any questions in the meantime, please take a look at our Stay at Home Refund page which answers questions around the refund.

Championing community efforts

Your refund is part of a wider Coronavirus response. As well as refunding £110m to our customers, we’re supporting the incredible efforts of emergency services and NHS workers staff, the wider community and our staff in the following ways:

tick We’ve made policy changes for NHS and emergency services workers to make their life easier in the event of an accident and keep them on the road

tick A £4 million Admiral Support Fund has been set up to offer funding and support throughout south Wales – our home for the past 27 years

tick Our dedicated staff are all receiving full pay. No staff are being furloughed under the UK Government-funded scheme

Once again, thank you for being an Admiral customer and for everything you’re doing at this unprecedented time.

For now, stay safe and we’ll get back in touch with you in the coming weeks with more information about your refund, you don’t need to do anything.

Wow that’s certainly not what I would’ve expected from a car insurance company - have always had to hustle them to lower their prices each year! Thanks for sharing

can't fault an insurance company for doing a refund without customers asking for it...unless they know that the customers are entitled to more...

Lol perhaps, especially if people look at the breakdown of what they pay for in their coverage

Such a shame I’m not with Admiral 🥴 I could do with a little boost of good news at the moment 😉

I reckon the other insurers may feel the pressure to do the same, as there’s no reason for them to charge when most cars aren’t being used. I guess it depends on whether they can afford it or not...though they usually can

Diamond are doing the same which is part of the same group I think. I got the email from them a couple of days ago.

I would like my company to give a refund, they know we are all going nowhere - or at least not very far - we haven't been anywhere for a month now! 🐞

Got it and appreciate any free money. However, 25 quid is great for someone only paying 300 quid a year for their insurance but crap for a young person paying £1500. They should have means tested these refunds and all insurers should do it.

I hadn't thought of it like this. I thought £25 was generous as it's 10% of my annual premium. Maybe a percentage rather than a set amount would have been a better idea. They must be saving millions with the reduced payouts for claims.

ClaireF1978 I have a cynical business mind and can see straight through marketing which is ultimately what this is. It's likely nothing for them as you say but providing a whole load of publicity. A lot of companies are at it, making out to be helping but actually using it as subliminal marketing. JustEat are another example. They're giving out a discount to NHS workers but how much business has that generated from people thinking what a nice, selfless company they are? It's all business! 😁

Dennab I had thought of this! I'm with Admiral and of course every little helps and I really appreciate this refund, but my insurance is around £600 so for me that's about about two weeks worth of insurance - while for others it may be months worth

Great my insurance is only £220 with them so that's made it even cheaper

I got the same email, it's nice that they did this automatically. I know a lot of people have taken their cars off the road for 12 weeks to save money but my car is not parked in my drive just now so was not worth risking it.

I see that LV are now offering refunds of between £20 and £50 on car and motorbike insurance policies. However unlike Admiral's more widespread scheme it's only available to people who have been financially affected by Coronavirus in specific ways.

  1. You've been made unemployed at any point since 1 March 2020.
  2. You've been furloughed but haven't yet received money through the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme.
  3. You're self-employed and unable to work or trade because of coronavirus, and haven't yet received money via the Self-employment Income Support Scheme.

They say that other people can get help with things such as making changes to a policy to save money without incurring fees.

I don't think breakdown companies are doing the same, perhaps because its considerably cheaper - not even all insurance companies are, very few in fact as far as I know.

You could write to them and try to get some kind of rebate, and use admiral as an example. Whenever I’ve had to negotiate insurance prices, referring to competitors always seems to help knock some money off
