Advice for Decorating the Hall
Ask a Question
I'm slowly decorating the house. I've done pretty much everything, it's just a case of putting in some accessories. I'm thinking about what to do with the hallways, one downstairs and one upstairs. I'm thinking about putting a mirror up and I'm considering runners. My issue is what colours to go for. We have a chocolate brown carpet on the stairs and I'm thinking that I should runners in the same colour to match so it doesn't look strange or should I go for different colours? I don't want it to look strange. I'm not 100% sure what I want to do with the hall so any other suggestions would also be welcome.
Arrrrr not a hall we decorating ours well my OH is while I do homeschooling and he keeps getting part way and changing his mind.
Imnotcheap we have already painted it, it's just to make it look more welcoming. My husband doesn't care about how it is decorated as long as he doesn't have to do it!
Keep it brown and the runners with a colour Amazon have some great runners rugs with brown and creams or red, keep walls bright because if you sell it’s a blank canvas. I have brown carpet with cream and a black framed mirror.
Ann1984 I have already painted the house, it is all neutral and just adding colour with accessories. I'm not changing the carpet on the stairs which was why I thought keeping the accessories brown would be best. We are planning to sell once my husband gets a new job, so want it to be a blank canvass for new owners but to also look welcoming.
MrsCraig yeah that’s what am saying had a runner with a colour in maybe some canvas prints using command strips instead of mirror so no holes in walls this can be off putting to some buyers. Less is more we put our house up for sale last year but because market was poor we had to pull out and it sold in under 24hrs.
Ann1984 I would be using the command strips for the mirror but would be using one of the hook type ones, I have one holding up our clock in the living room. I can't find any canvass type prints that I like or are neutral enough, plus I don't think a canvass would look right where I'm planning to put it in the hall. Our house is quite minimalist anyway, just wanting to make it look nice.
MrsCraig Cream and brown is neutral and warm and would make the place a blank canvas. If you do put in a pop of colour, make sure that the colour is repeated three times in the space and then it won't look strange. Three picture frames or a vase, a picture frame and a runner ... If the colour is repeated three times, it is going to look deliberate.
kfe202 our stairs are chocolate brown and the walls are magnolia with white woodwork, so I'm planning to stick to those colours to keep it neutral but still undecided about a runner or a welcome mat, definitely getting a mirror and possibly a vase. I like the idea of having the colour 3 times so it looks deliberate
We put up lining paper in our hall and wanted a light paint to brighten it up. It turned out we picked the same colour as the lining paper. It was difficult to see the where we had painted. It wasn’t until real daylight hit it we saw we had missed loads.
eyeballkerry I have already repainted the hall and we have wallpaper going up the stairs, so it's more accessories to brighten it up a bit but I'm worried that the runners won't look right. Plus when we came to view the house there wasn't any sort of decoration in the hall, so wondering if it would be too much.
Also what is lining paper?
The trick with doing your own decorating is to only paint the walls in daylight with the lights off, as you won't have the shadows. also if when using lining paper you still see the seems, gypsum and a light sandpaper and it'll look like plain walls.
Just be careful where you place a mirror in upstairs hallway. In the past I have wandered to the bathroom in middle of the night and in my bleary state thought I had come face to face with an intruder/ghost lol.
It is always hard to get an exact match so I would agree with Ann for runners, russet, dark beige etc.
I find mirror in downstairs hall essential and have one with a shelf and hooks, very handy for umbrella and currently face masks.
Lynibis I can imagine that would be rather scary in the middle of the night thinking there was an intruder! I am not planning to put a mirror in the upstairs hallway, there is only one place it could go and it wouldn't look right there, so I'm just putting one downstairs. I have seen mirrors with a shelf and thought they would handy, never seen one with hooks on it though, will look into that!
I think a runner brings some interest to a hallway plus you can take it with you when you move. It also has the added benefit of
protecting your carpet in high traffic areas
beccatavender we only have carpet on the stairs but yes it gets the majority of the dirt on it. I'm just not sure if a runner would look right in my hallway or if I will like how it looks
Good idea I know a runner looks good on a wooden or tiled floor it draws the eye making it look longer
With it being narrow am thinking no to runner but yes to a welcome doormat to keep it light a brown runner may make it dark
We've two long darkish passages with beige/brown carpet and no windows, we have something similar to this in one of them, gives the impression it's longer and lighter (it doesn't mark the wall, we put it back up after decorating) https://www.wayfair.co.uk/home-decor/pdp/east-urban-home-red-blossom-flowers-wall-sticker-u000649584.html
lilyflower I think that's really pretty but my husband would hate it and I would never hear the end of his moaning!
The hallways aren't dark, just not very exciting, but then again it's a hallway!
I think a runner would look nice, a good way of introducing some colour, Dunhelm have some nice ones, https://www.runrug.com/hall/runners
beccatavender I like the zigzag one, if I can find one that is brown but with some colour in it that would be good, just so it matches the stairs
I really like big round mirrors, either with a black frame, or gold or copper depending on what suits the colour scheme.
You can get any size at https://www.runrug.com/hall/runners
Plus I think they are offering 10% off, I would be tempted to add a splash of colour
I agree with putting a mirror in the hallway but only if it doesn't look too cumbersome, I would also look into running some LED strip lights down the staircase, preferably hidden under a bannister that way you won't have any glare and you can create a different lighting each day until you find something suitable that you like, the colour of the carpet will then be irrelevant and give you more scope for accessories to suit your mood.
pato I won't be getting anything too ornate, just something simple that I know will suit my house. I don't like the idea of putting LED lights under the banister. I'm doing this for selling the house later on, so not something I would consider putting in, plus I don't think it would look right on my stairs. I'm not worried about accessories to suit my mood, but I would like it to match the carpet so there is flow through the hallways
I see, I was going to ask what shape your hallway was but noticed your picture, so if you're planning on selling I think I'd maybe buy a few picture frames from Ikea as they're under £10 each and put prints in them, then space them equally along the wall, and maybe a mirror on the other side, good luck.
