Advice - Teenager Constantly Shoplifting

Ask a Question

Good evening I have a family member who is having trouble with her teenager. She has no respect and has started stealing from stores she is 13.

What would you do if your child she has removed all items and totally around 100 maybe more.

A would you call police

B would you go to stores and tell them

I'd be very firm with her and make sure she returns everything she has stolen and then ground her until she is genuinely apologetic and has learned her lesson.

This might help https://www.familyeducation.com/life/stealing/why-kids-steal-what-do-about-it

If nothing there is appropriate - then the last bit of advice "seek professional help" should be heeded.

I would be very strict. My mum told me that if i was gunna be shoplifting that I couldn't live under her roof (never did it anyway). Maybe your friend might have to say the same to her teenager and maybe they might think differently.

KijManhas i recommended counselling but the child is so stubborn she loses it with her parents and hits them

I would send her to an army camp and they would sort her out.

If you go to the store they will call the police, so call them yourself and ask them to have a talk with the child and explain what will happen if this continues then take her and things back to store. Find out if she is being bullied into stealing and frightened to say or is she hanging around with older kids and trying to keep up. Thankfully I never had a problem with mine. I hope she and her parents get the help she needs before it spirals into something more serious.
