Advice on Gaming Pc

Ask a Question

Just looking for abit of advice if possible. Last year I got my son a custom made gaming pc for Christmas and it is complete rubbish. Very slow. So the other day I had someone come look at it. They said it had an i3 processor which apparently is very bad for it to be a gaming pc. Its like the brain of the computer he said. So I'd end a new processor i5 or above. Also need to get a 4k monitor for it to be any good for gaming he said. Do you think I should just buy these and get a fix it shop to put the processor in or do you think I'd be better off just buying a complete new pc or gaming laptop even? And also if I get a gaming laptop would the new oculus quest 2 be able to connect to it?

Thanks

There is some advice here about spec. Which components are best to buy is always changing as new higher performance parts become available at the different price points. Normally with gaming PC's its more about the GPU (graphics card) than the CPU. I don't see why an i3 couldn't be a decent gaming PC but its all relative to how much you paid. Personally I think AMD offers better value mostly but again this does vary depending on how much you are spending. You don't need 4K for a gaming PC, it might be nice to have but if you are using a smaller monitor you can get away with less. Black Friday or Cyber Monday is likely the best time to buy but don't assume you are getting a deal always check to see what the prices of the same spec PC was before Black Friday. Some retailers put their prices up before Black Friday just so they can drop them again on Black Friday.

Not into gaming , but I read into laptops several months ago and got myself a laptop that was fast and could be used for gaming (haven't gamed yet as I still have a life ! ) .

There are 3 things that make a good gaming computer (laptop or PC )

The processor , complicated by the fact that there are several generations ! an i5 of the 5 th generation probably won't be as good as an i3 of the 9th generation . Not sure what generation we're on now but mine is a 9th gen i7 which was the best 7 months ago .

Next you need plenty of RAM 8GB is probably enough but the 16GB I have leaves room for manoeuvre . RAM is cheaply upgradeable on most computers .

The third thing for a gaming computer is the graphics card, I Have the NVIDIA GE Force

1650 which was nearly the best 7 months ago but probably been surpassed by now .

Hope that gives you about as much idea as I have (which isn't very much !) , never yet used mine for gaming .

If you have a stack type PC should be relatively easy to upgrade as you just slot cards in (on a laptop its far more problematical ) .

Unfortunately on Latest Deals you rarely get any help ,I posted 5 or 6 Laptops in Jan /Feb asking for advice , zero result .

Hopefully someone will answer your question who is more up to date with it and tell you you will need xxxxx processor which will cost £x and yyy graphics card which will cost you £xx . I'm fairly confident on the 16 Gb RAM .

And yes a 4K monitor once you have the computer sorted .

So I hope that explains it a bit but I'm afraid I haven't got any specific suggestions as I haven't even used mine as a gaming computer yet .

TaraAnneDunne Remember with a computing set up the end result will only be as good as the weakest link . ie no good having a great processor , loads of RAM,a great monitor but a rubbish graphics card .

My advice would be:

16GB RAM at least, 3200Mhz would be good, 3600 better. You need to check Motherboard compatibility as some don't take that much frequency.

Graphics cards, wait until all the new ones are available from AMD so that the older ones go cheaper.

The best bang for your buck processor imho is the AMD 3600. Single core performance is great.

Pre builts are good for those who don't know how to mount, but more expensive.
