Ask a Question

If you could go back and give your younger self any advice what would it be? (Or advice to anyone else in general)

My advice would be to run my mouth back at the bullies in school, as school wont actually do anything about it and it'll stop those bullies giving me more crap.

“Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it ... he who doesn't ... pays it.”

Albert Einstein

If you want to be able to afford to retire – make time your friend, not your enemy.

Start saving into your pension right away.

The earlier you start saving the better.

Why? What's Compound Interest? Here's a quick explanation:

Unfortunately when the best interest rate becomes less than the rate of inflation (as it is at present) then although compound interest, is usually a good thing, it is sometimes not the best investment

Fortunately Pension funds typically invest in a diversified portfolio of assets i.e. mostly company shares and bonds, not simply cash. The compounding benefit comes from the re-investment of the share dividends and bond interest.

Inside a pension wrapper an inflation busting annual yield of 4% or more is currently readily achievable. You can't get that level of return by putting your money in the bank or building society.

With pension savings people also benefit from free money from the government in the form of tax relief on their pension contributions, and often get additional employer contributions too (yet more free money). Other savings and investments don’t have these benefits.

I think compound interest is always a good thing. That is provided you are receiving it (on your savings and investments), and not paying it (such as on credit card debt).

GSM I was going to say something very similar. I missed out on the career of my choice due to circumstances at the time. It is my only regret.

Grannyclock same here. I wanted to study psychology instead of finance but my parents didn't let me.

In my experience, every wrong turn or mistake in your life leads to where you are presently. I could easily advice myself to not marry my ex, being as he was an abuser, but I couldn't be happier now with the love and family life my sons have brought into my life, which I wouldn't have, had we not married.

Don’t get married. Or let a male control you. Spend more time with friends x

Ann1984 I understand that, I have just had a very bad experience of marriage.

However I wouldn’t be where I am now without my current partner, I have a gorgeous son and run my own business and he has done nothing but encourage me 😘

Spend more time travelling, and perhaps even spend some time working abroad.

I'd advise any school leaver that their education is just starting.

I'd advise myself that although it's a good thing to learn from my own mistakes, it's even better to learn from the mistakes of others.

(unfortunately there are many who don't learn from either).😀

Just because he says he loves you doesn't mean he does. I'd also tell myself that time is a great healer.

Id also tell myself to go and take photographs of the great memories I made with my grandad
