Advice for for fighting infection and boosting immune system
Other
As some of you may remember, I had a bad facial skin infection recently and for more than 6 weeks suffered discomfort and embarrassment. (See 'Ode to my Face')
It prompted me to research foods for fighting infection and boosting immune system. I will add links but there are many more if you search.
I am into aromatherapy and I made up my own mix of coconut oil base with tea tree, lavender and other essential oils that fight infection (again look them up) and within a day or two my face was almost back to normal. As rule of thumb it is 10 drops of essential oil to 100mls of base oil. Or water.
Whilst stocks of hand sanitizer are dwindling I would suggest that tea tree oil in cool boiled water in a sterilised glass container would be a handy substitute with a couple of extra drops for good measure. You could also use this for wiping surfaces.
I have been taking turmeric capsules for a while now and it is also a good infection fighter and anti inflammatory, I can vouch for this as my joints have ceased hurting.
I am obviously not a doctor and offer this advice in the hope that it will go a little way to keeping us healthier, and if we are unfortunate enough to catch coronavirus it may help to fight it.
Diet is so important as a load of junk food will not give you the nutrients needed to fight even a cold! If you do not eat enough fruit and veg then take vitamin c. The fizzy tablets are great for kids as they will think it is orangeade. I would break the tablets in half for kids and you cannot overdose on vitamin c, you will merely wee it out. Also keep up your fluid intake. I include turmeric active teabags in my liquid intake, very palatable with a squeeze of lemon and dollop of runny honey, all of which are infection fighters included in the list below.

Excuse me for writing the first comment (I don't usually do this) but I have been for my 6 monthly diabetic check since posting this topic. I am thrilled that I have gone down from 48 to 40 on the diabetic scale and I am absolutely convinced that this is to do with taking turmeric regularly. Although I am relatively careful with my diet I have not been particularly good. 40 is the figure where you cannot be called diabetic but not completely out of the woods. I am just pleased not to have to take any drugs!
Brilliant news. So happy for you. Turmeric has some great medicinal benefits. At the moment I am all about Cinnamon on my hot chocolate. I am right into my anti-inflammatory foods. I follow a dairy and mostly gluten-free program these days. I am not calling it a diet as it's a program for life!
I have lost quite a few kg without even trying. I think if you are disciplined with your food and exercise it can answer a lot of challenges.
Xx
This really is great news and it just proves that improvement can be made if a person is pro-active rather than just accepting.
'An Ode to my face' Was it really 4 months ago? - I did apologise for laughing. Thanks for the oil ratio as I recently got an amazing set for a silly price here and really want to make the most of them. I've tried hard to incorporate Turmeric into my diet but I am either lazy or forgetful and have long periods of not taking any at all until I am reminded. I think taking capsules would be the way forward for me.
This is the page on Amazon and I got the best seller ones. They were £11.99 but I see they have gone up. I keep mine on top of the tea/coffee caddies and I STILL forget to take them from time to time.
My colleagues have taken to calling me the witchy woman as I often make up potions of oils for their aches and pains and skin complaints, they seem to help, although it could be the placebo effect!
I can recommend Neals Yard Remedies, Essential Oils by DK publishers, also on Amazon. Lists all the oils and what they are good for and how to use them. I got quite a few in the Holland and Barrett penny sale.
Lynibis I never sneer at old remedies as I honestly believe we will have to revert to old antiseptics etc in the future. I went away and looked for some capsules but now I'm not sure what the difference is. Please have a look at these and be honest - are they rubbish? https://www.amazon.co.uk/FoodPURA-Turmeric-Curcumin-Capsules-Swallow/dp/B07PPVS5MX/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2VBW5SX80EMK8&keywords=turmeric+curcumin+capsules&qid=1583414984&sprefix=Turmeric%2Caps%2C143&sr=8-3
angemski well being honest I probably wouldn't buy them. The choice I made was based on the strength and reviews as they were 1440 mgs and the one you posted was 600 with only 1 review. But they are also in H & B so if you got in the next penny sale might be good, and probably good quality. I read that two tablespoons a day is beneficial! I have some in powder form and you can sprinkle on food like salt and pepper. On one of the Google searches there was a recipe for cauliflower cheese with a good sprinkle of turmeric on top.
Yes, I am open to all types of natural remedies. Sometimes pharmaceutical drugs can cause more ills than they cure.
Although Vitamin C is usually quite safe TOO MUCH can cause kidney stones and some other problems. It's the same with many "quite safe" home remedies - it's best to check on what the higher safe tolerances are especially for children.https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/326249#recommended-dosage
I'd be interested in knowing if anybody has any advice for supplements/remedies for UTI / kidney infection. I'm currently suffering my second infection in the last few weeks & feeling pretty rough. I'm on antibiotics again after seeing dr again today. I have just ordered cranberry juice with shopping tomoz but really want to see this off for good. Any recommendations greatly appreciated.
Glitterandgold sorry for late reply, couldn't find your comment second time!
Anyway, I could write a book on this subject as I suffered dreadfully for years and it took me that long to get to know my body and why it was doing this.
I had recurrent infections and had to get up every night, sometimes twice or more. That was even without an infection.
There are conflicting opinions about cranberry but doubt it does any harm. The main thing is to drink plenty of water.
Anyway I had countless outings ruined wanting to get home to the loo and countless sleepless nights. I realised that when my bladder was empty it irritated because the residue was so concentrated, replicating the feeling of an infection and wanting to constantly sit on the loo. It sometimes does lead to infection but often I would drink a pint of water and within half an hour the irritation and need to go would end.
This also applies at night. Going to bed without a drink for hours before was MORE likely to make me get up in the night. Now I drink as I wish before bed (not coffee) and I never get up. It takes a while to reset your bladder but i just ignored the urge and went back to sleep. I wish we could talk but hope this helps. I wonder if the concentrated urine might replicate the infection test to positive and sometimes anti biotics might not be needed. I have not needed them for years now. I stress I am not medical and only tell of my own experience.
Lynibis I had forgotten how awful uti's are. The last time Id had one was when I was pregnant many years ago & don't remember it being this bad. Initially I had no loo symptoms just a awful pain in my back, trip to drs & test revealed blood, white cells & protein in my urine so in no doubt it was a infection. This weekend the pain in my back returned & have felt poorly since with a mild fever & constant urges for loo, but just tested positive for protein this time, yet I feel worse. I have felt better today so the antibiotics must be working. I'm pretty good at drinking water throughout the day as I carry a water bottle with me but I have upped my intake over the last few days & been drinking cranberry now too. I have read today whilst googling that barley water (particularly robinsons peach barley apparently) is good so I might also give that a go in my water. It cant hurt! Ill try anything to stop a recurrence. I dislike taking antibiotics as I already have digestive issues & they play havoc on my stomach. Interesting that you found not stopping drinking at night helped you, tho not sure I could ignore the strong urge just yet I'd be too scared of a night time accident .
Glitterandgold hi again. It certainly sounds as if your problem is/was very different to mine and hopefully your doctor will do further tests if it continues.
A lot of mine was mind over matter with the night time thing and came to a head when I stayed with my sister for 8 weeks about three years ago. Her loo was downstairs so if I got up it meant creeping down stairs, through the lounge, through the kitchen, through the boot room (disturbing dog) before reaching the bathroom. By the time I got back to bed I was wide awake!
Lots of people get up 'just in case' but I now never get up and never feel the need so my body is obeying my brain!
Anyway, I wish you a speedy recovery and that you can implement changes to avoid it in future.
Hi! Sorry for the delay in my reply, I spent yesterday catching up on all the work I was behind on. I'm feeling so much better than I was so thats good, I will be continuing with the larger fluid intake & hopefully see the end of this infection. Its funny you say your body is now obeying your brain, my OH often talks about thinking of our brains as computers & that we can re programme it. I guess this could apply to our bodies in many ways too. Thank you Lynibis for taking the time to reply to me, il certainly take on board your advice & bare it in mind if symptoms continue for me.
