Are You Affected by Flight Shaming?

In the News

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-51067440

due to the ‘flight shaming’ movement, Sweden has seen a 4% drop in the number of people flying via its airports, which is almost unheard of for his side of the world

is this trend likely to extend to other countries?

I guess not likely until alternatives are introduced

It's possible that many people who are very concerned about the environment, particularly supporters of movements such as Extinction Rebellion, would now consider holidaying in the UK or travelling to mainland Europe on Eurostar. If I'm travelling in the UK or going to Paris, Brussels, etc I prefer taking the train. I don't fly frequently enough to feel guilty about it 🚂

I haven't been on a plane in 12 years. When we go on holiday it is in the UK so we either drive or get the ferry. So I don't feel bad about getting planes as I don't get them.

There are a number of reasons for the 4% decrease - such as Swedish aviation tax, softening economy worries, the weak Swedish crown and the climate debate.

Flight shaming may put a few people off flying but hasn't caused a 4% decrease in Sweden at all.

Less than 1% decrease would be my guess, i.e. insignificant.

According to ICAO the total number of passengers carried on scheduled services worldwide rose to 4.3 billion in 2018, 6.4 per cent higher than in 2017, while the number of departures reached 37.8 million in 2018, a 3.5 per cent increase. These figures are for 2018, but I think the trend is clear - more flights not less.

Look out for the Chinese, the number of international flights they are taking has been growing massively every year for the last few years.
