Can you afford Covid tests? Does not being able to afford them prevent you from doing anything e.g. travel?

I am following the costs and requirements of these tests very closely, as I'd love to travel somewhere European to visit a Christmas Market.
A little investigation and I found some tests that I could get for around £60 - a bit galling when the plane tickets are only a third of that.
Not so much the cost of the tests that's put us off going aboard this year as Foreign holidays are dirt cheap and some holiday companies are subsidising them anyway , it was more the constant changes of the rules often at short notice, the confusion over what is or is not required to travel, and the potential for massive queues and confusion at airports. A week down on the South coast of England for us this year in August which is lovely, but the weather's not guaranteed. The static caravan cost us almost as much as we could have had a week in Portugal for.
Its ridiculous that you have to pay for a covid test to go abroad but any other time they are free!
As it is usually the country being visited that usually requires the tests - I fail to see why UK tax payers should have to subsidize the holidays of those who choose to travel abroad during a pandemic.
Most FREE tests available here are not considered enough as there is no proof of who took them.
