At What Age Did You Pass Your Driving Test and What Was Your First Car?

Ask a Question

I passed my test at 18 and my first car was a brown mini. My next car was a Datsun sunny, showing my age now.

What do you think of this?

Datsun Sunny! Amazing. Brown Mini as well - 70s I assume. They were still cheap until recently. I wanted one but could never afford it now. I passed at 17 years old and drove an Austin in their latter days of being a part of British Leyland.

Dennab Haha I had a Datsun Sunny estate which I passed my test in at age 17.

It was a right rust bucket.

TheChimp I'd prefer to drive one of them now though compared to all that modern SUV crap. A car with character!

Dennab I also had an yellow Mini from the 70s. No power steering and hardly any suspension.

Now that was a ride and a half πŸ˜†

TheChimp Your coccyx wouldn't last five minutes in that on some of the roads around where I used to live. There were more pot holes than the moon. What I'd give now to own one though! Damn classic car collectors knocking the prices up.

Dennab I used to travel from Cardiff to West Wales (around 100 miles) every weekend to see my boy, and I was 'hammering' it down the M4 at 60mph with the engine screaming.

TheChimp That sounds both terrifying and exciting.

Dennab Didn't give a monkey's back in the day. As long as you had transport, it was fine.

I passed when I was about 19.

First car was a green Opal Kadett.

Cost me Β£2000 and it turns out it was a pile of c&^p, everything that could go wrong on it did go wrong during the 3 or so years I owned It.

Ended up selling it for Β£200 as I just couldn't afford to fix it when the clutch gave up.

I passed my test when I was 18. As I was away at uni and didn't need a car, I drove my mums car when I was home for the holidays and then got my first car after I graduated when I was 21. My first car was a Ford fiesta zetec, which I still drive and I will drive it until it is too expensive to fix and then I will buy a 2nd hand car, probably another Ford.

Lynibis Original 500 or new style? You have stuck to small cars with that Lupo πŸ™‚

Dennab it was old style back in about 1983 and it had a lever switch ignition. I think predictive for you but think you meant VW Up! which I love. Prior to that I had a Toyota Aygo, not a patch on the VW.

As my job involves being in a car/mini bus all day the driver and I can run errands in between jobs (pre covid) on our own time so mine does not get used much. I feel I am doing my bit by having a small car, low emissions, cheap tax and 63 mpg.

Lynibis Oh yes, of course. The Up, not the Lupo! It's certainly a cheap car to run and fun to drive I'm sure. I know a few people with those original 500s. I would like one myself but the prices are way beyond my budget now.

I passed at 21 at the 2nd attempt. First car was a 1.2 Ford Fiesta. I really wanted a sporty XR2 model but the insurance was nearly as expensive as the car.

seasider71 My Mum had a similar thought - to buy me a Renault 5 Turbo before realising the insurance would have required a remortgage.

Passed at 17y 10m. I remember well as Dad offered to pay for test if I passed first time, I/he had no confidence. Drove his Escort and my boyfriends Capri. Got my first car as a 50th Birthday present from the ex, he then sold it 4 years later! I now have no need for a car.

I started racing classic minis when I was 12 years old and passed my driving test when I was 17, had a lesson on my birthday lol. I have always been around cars and the motor industry so have been through so many cars but I started off with a MK4 Ford Fiesta!
