What Age Do You Perceive as Old

Ask a Question

I know the saying ‘ your as old as you feel’ but these days I speak to eighty year olds and they do not think they are old. So what is your opinion?

What do you think of this?

I usually say "He was only halfway and he passed away" so by "halfway" I mean 50. Now, old? 70.

Most people around the age of 65-70 haven't aged too well but some still look great (and I'm not talking about plastic surgeries).

I played tennis doubles this week with a man in his eighties. Not only was he very good, I discovered afterwards that he was also blind in one eye.

One set was enough for him as he was recovering from a broken wrist, but I think prior to the break he could play two sets.

A lot of people in their twenties and thirties couldn‘t do that!

It is all in the mind. My parents are in their 70s and are old in their ways and attitude. Yet I work with older people in some of my charity work and those around 80 are up an about and very modern in the way they act and talk. Keep doing things and keep up with the new.

My Grandad had his 102nd birthday a few days ago. And although to me that is old, he is still active and healthy. Still lives in his own house, cares for himself, gardens, is writing a book. I personally think keeping your brain as active as you can by doing puzzles etc is a good thing and may possible help keep the brain active as you age.

My dad still thinks he's a young man, even though I've been telling him he’s old since I was a teenager! His spirit is still young - his comebacks are just as good as they were decades ago 😜 As long as his mind and outlook on life is positive, he will stay young forever, even with the dodgy knees and extra pains

When I was a teenager I though 21 was 'over the hill' lol. I no longer think that a number defines a person but tend to connect with a range of individuals, regardless of their 'tag'. I truly believe that your interests determine whether you will be elderly, in your ways and your attitude to life. I think that a love of music and a varied social circle will keep a person young at heart, despite their age related aches and pains.

I know some young people who act as if they are old (20-somethings acting as if they are miserly scrooges), and some older people who act as if they are young. Each to their own

My friend told me the other day she was speaking to a 38 year old man (via tinder 🤣) my immediate thought was too old, but then i realised shes 32 and so he was only 6 years older. I still think im a teenager 🙈

I would say 70+ but this is base on their appearance what matters is for them to be healthy and happy individuals who are loved and respected by their friends, family and the community. Many old individuals are very much capable!

Well i definitely dont feel old . I am nearly seventy . Sometimes I look at other older people and try to guess their ages - then I realise they are about my age !

I am teaching myself some foreign languages , garden , travel abroad,

have numerous interests, stay involved with youngsters of various ages , swim ,dance, walk

All these things help to keep me active and youthful. The aged self is in the mind .

janetchamberlai I loved your response - you are probably more active than people half your age and proves my earlier point.

I think we all feel (inside) that we are still very capable and young no matter what our age actually is. I think we become 'old' when we can't remember that we told you the same thing the last 3/400 times we spoke to you! (My dad at 93 is my point in case)!

I think after 60 because with our generation, current 50 year olds still look great! ALSO who else has a fear of saggy skin and wrinkles because I certainly do! I'm thinking ahead and trying to avoid it by exercising everyday and balanced diet.

I remember as a child, once I could work it out, thinking how old, decrepit and past it I would be by the millennium. As I crept nearer and nearer I realised that 47 was nowhere near old and 2 decades later still going strong. My child self would think I am now ancient.
