Alcohol Hand Sanitiser Users Beware

In the News

I've always said that alcohol hand sanistiser is only necessary as a backup if you cannot wash your hands with normal soap and water.

This article points out that alcohol sanistiser can actually have negative effects on your body's 'good bacteria' if you over use the stuff. If you're constantly smothering it over your hands at home out of habit, maybe read this article and decide for yourself.

I rarely use it. I have to used it when out of the house and wanted to clean my hands after touching something before I touched my son. But that was before the lockdown started and I only took him out when I had to run an errand that couldn't wait till my husband finished work. We had it in the house from when our son was first born and anyone visiting )which was only his grandparents due to restrictions put in place by his cardiology team) had to use it before being allowed near our son as we had to be careful about infection risk. When we are in the house, soap and water is the best! Plus my wee man loves getting his hands washed.

Washing your hands can be counterproductive as bacteria can and will become resistant. I mean, if I have my hands dirty (literally) then I'm going to wash them, but we shouldn't do it always for the tiniest thing.

PhilipMarc I think you're confusing washing your hands with the body building its immune system. Never at any point has a medical expert said during this whole epidemic "washing your hands is counterproductive". Washing your hands stops COVID-19 in its tracks! How could that be counterproductive?

No one really knows where the virus so washing one's hands too many times unnecessarily can lead to other health issues. It should only be done if necessary.

WHO, "Professor Lockdown", etc I'd not trust their "expert" opinion, personally. Dennab

PhilipMarc I can't agree with you on this. Washing your hands is just basic hygiene. I don't know why you would think otherwise unless it's one of those weird conspiracy theories flying about. What possible health issues can it cause?

I personally don't like the stuff, and I'm very big on washing hands. I find they dry skin too much, and I still don't feel clean without washing away stuff...

MeestairChrees Weirdly I used to use it all the time out of habit at work even after washing my hands (but won't be anymore) and it didn't seem to dry out my skin. The Aldi liquid soap has done that though with the slight increase in usage so we're now using bar soap as it doesn't dry our hands out as much. I looked on the back of that Aldi soap and the list of ingredients looked like the contents of the closest oil refinery.

Dennab the soap at my workplace really dries skin - awful. Which Aldi soap did you use? I've been using one of theirs recently - a creamy one and it's fine. Dove liquid soap is even nicer though.

MeestairChrees It was their 50p copy of Baylis & Harding.

Dennab ah, not sure I've tried it. One I'm using at the moment is kind of a golden orange colour maybe? Quite creamy.

MeestairChrees The stuff we have is more of a clear colour. I just bought some Pears bars so well and truly off the liquid soap now anyway!

My hands are too dry with all the washing so using it hurts as im staying in hardly had to use sanitizer. I do find it useful at family picnic (when we allowed out)

Imnotcheap That's the soap I meant. We had a similar situation so I bought some fairly standard white bar soap and it has turned out to be better on our hands. Don't assume more expensive is better!

Washing of hands has always been the best way to clean. Hand sanitizer should only be a temporary measure when there is no facility available for you to wash your hands. It should never be a long term solution

LeighReidAtanas Try telling that to the millions who bought gallons of the stuff to go with their bog roll collection and flour.
