Amazon Charged Me for a Pre-Order

This is odd, so, Amazon normally charges during the process of dispatch but a pre-order I made recently with them ended up with me paying much sooner than expected. But I ended up cancelling because I found it cheaper elsewhere do it was pointless to charge me for a pre-order.
I read comments about Amazon doing this to other customers but, you know, I didn't expect it would happen to me. You never do, no one does.
I won't be pre-ordering from Amazon anymore, not that I did too often anyway but still.
I have never been charged for a pre-order before, that's scandalous. Did you get your money back?
They returned it but this new rule of charging pre-orders is really strange and could affect them somewhat negatively as people take pre-ordering elsewhere. Or just order unless it's the only retailer still with stock and accept it.
Rockman It has certainly put me off pre-ordering anything from them ever again. As you say it will definitely have a negative effect on their business.
Personally i would rather be charged when i order so i can keep track of my spending and whats available. I dont like when money is taken a while after because i forget what its for 
Quite a few retailers charge you full price when pre-ordering, especially game companies.
The only reason I could imagine that amazon would charge for a pre-order is because of people adding them to their baskets to make the delivery free (those without prime) and then cancelling the pre-order after. 
So far I’ve never been charged for a pre-order more than a few days before it’s due to be delivere. I have noticed they’ve started charging delivery on games but also do price guarantee so you get your order at the lowest price so thanks for the information I’ll be sure to keep an eye on my account 
I feel it's better to be charged when it's ordered, that way it's not some almost in expected charge when it's released.
Did they definitely charge you, or was it just being held by your bank as pre-authorised (or whatever the term is)? I've noticed it on some things that shouldn't have been charged that soon - depends on the bank and the retailer.
