Amazon Destroying Hundreds of Thousands of Unsold Items Every Week
In the News
This is an utter disgrace, smart tvs, laptops , vacuums , all put in the rubbish
Only 28% of unsold items are being marked as to donate, the rest are destroyed and sent to landfill

I agree this is a disgrace it should be given to people who need it or donated to a charity not sent to land fill
Amazon should be ashamed of themselves T, but what do you expect from a US owned company, the americans are the champions of the throw away society
I also know a high end wedding photographer who was forced to work for Amazon during the worst of last year. Despite the obvious and massive decrease in earnings, he's not afraid of hard work. However, he said the way they treat delivery drivers (the job he had) is awful.
I don't understand why they would do this, surely it would be easy to find people only to willing to take anything and make use of it ,and then they would not even have to dump them
We watched a documentary about this on youtube...we couldnt believe amazon just destroy the majority of returns. Even if they're still fit for purpose! Its shocking!
Crazy Isn’t it. Just destroy it. What a waste. I doesn’t really shock me. All companies do it in some way. Needs to be stopped.
Many fast fashion companies do the same with clothes when you return them- they just get destroyed instead of resold/ donated... absolutely disgusting. It’s sad how much companies like this just choose the lazy option and destroy things (and the planet in the process)
Imagine if they did just put them in giant skips , people would be queuing a mile long to get their hands and the tvs computers etc , thats why they smash them up
Its terrible that its more profitable for them to destroy items so they dont have to pay for storage and its tax deductable
I have seen on you tube where there are companies that sell ex amazon and other retail articles in large crates, you pay one price for a mystery box or crate of goods and it could contain anything in any condition, usually they are returns and just package damage
Why cant they do this with these products they are destroying ?
Get these companies to buy the overstocked goods and release the space that way ?
No, thats too ethical !!
With clothes in particular, there are other countries where secondhand is more 'normal'. Poland in particular are big buyers of clothes from those Cash For Clothes businesses you see everywhere here. They'll come in with an articulated truck, load it up, pay probably £20k for the entire load and then resell back home. I don't understand why Amazon cannot at least do that. Just sell the stock at 20% of the original price in massive truck loads and then it's somebody else's problem. It can't be any harder to load it all into a container as opposed to destroying it.
Yes D, they must be paying people to do the destroying , just re-deploy them to load a container as you say, and theres no waste to dispose of either
Just by coincidence this was on the national news a few minutes ago, boris johnson said he is going to look into amazon and condemned the practice
Omg
This is shocking
Would be best off sending to army veterans and start up homes for people
Surely most of the items fit to sell would be sold via Amazon Warehouse. Other items may be serial returning items with intermittent faults that would cost money to sell again as likely would be returned. I think the issue is many items now are not repairable at an economic price. I suspect many smart tv's for example would have damaged screens and not be economic to repair. I'm sure many items are damaged in the post and not much you can do with them. I'm not defending Amazon but the fact they have Amazon Warehouse means they are clearly trying to sell returns.
Also there are many dishonest Amazon buyers who return incomplete or even different items. I got an old 26" rusty bicycle wheel sent to me when I ordered a 27.5" wheel. The previous customer had obviously just returned an old wheel in place of the new wheel and amazingly hadn't been spotted by Amazon plus I've had Amazon Warehouse items missing important accessories that had to go back. I had an Action camera where the internals seemed to be different to the spec. I think the original customer had carefully swopped out the original action camera internals and returned it with a more basic action camera inside the case. What do you do with such items.
The article suggests the items being destroyed are owned by 'Other Sellers' selling on the Amazon marketplace and using Amazon for the warehousing and fulfilment of their stock.
These vendors prefer to get rid of their unsold stock rather than pay Amazon to continue to store it. Amazon doesn't own this stock, the vendors do.
"Amazon’s business model means many vendors choose to house their products in Amazon’s warehouses, but the longer goods remain unsold, the more expensive it is to house them.
As a result, it is cheaper for vendors to get rid of stock than continue to store it."
.
