Amazon Opens First Uk Store
In the News
Retail giant’s new London store uses cameras and depth-censor tools so customers can pick up items and go
Is this the new shopping in future
Amazon opened its very first “contactless” food store outside the US, with customers able to head inside, pick products off the shelf and walk out without queuing at a till.
Sounds a bit unreal never come up here to our little town probably stay in big cities. Would be fin to try though. I hate it when things slow me down when shopping and even now I won't have to rush home (my youngest in school full time) doubt that will change
Wouldn't mind taking a look . Good idea but maybe with having premises they might now pay more in tax lol . Thanks for sharing though ann .
Oh wow, i didnt think this would be possible and never even knew it exist in the us, this does really interesting
I'm interested in trying it out. Although, it's near Ealing Broadway station, which isn't that close to me. Consequently, I won't be trying it out until sometime after the end of current lockdown
I’m looking forward to checking it out. They have 7 eleven stores like that out in Asia, but it only works out there as they have low crime rates
What is a censor-depth tool - can it access your bank information from your cards in order to make a payment when you leave the shop? It sounds very futuristic, not something that I would want to experience.
I saw this on the news last night. I won't be trying it out as I don't live anywhere near it but the idea is far too high tech for me. There was a woman on the news who said she didn't know what she had actually bought as she just picked it up and put it in her bag. I think that people will spend more than they intended to with this new type of store. Online you have to review your basket before you buy, so you know exactly what you are buying and can change your mind. Does the technology know if you have put an item back on the shelf because you changed your mind about buying it? Plus if this became common then it would affect jobs, sometimes technology isn't a good thing.
Presumably it will eliminate shoplifting so that must be a good thing. I wonder how it works if, like me, you change your mind all the time and keep putting things back.
It registers that you have took an item out of the trolley and asks if you to confirm it being removed
Amazon is more expensive than regular supermarkets, on average 10% but many foods much more expensive. The only reason people use it is free postage and unusual items. In London there are many specialist food shops anyway.
Ive been watching videos of people going into the Amqzon stores in the US always wanted to try it out, happy they are opening up a shop here in U.K
What I find very "questionable" is there appears to be absolutely no way a person who does not have a smart phone can shop in this store.
Don't Amazon realise that there are numerous people who don't have, don't need, don't want, and also don't want to be carrying around an EXPENSIVE piece of equipment.
From my own recent experiences with Amazon I wouldn't trust them to get things right. They don't even know the difference between a menthol sweet and a tea bag, or what day of the week it is. Their weights and description wording would get many smaller traders shut down, and they definitely get pricing wrong.

I've watched a couple of videos on this and seems interesting. Seems to be a very fancy scan and go. Its just a shame that I wont use for a long time without going to London.
SilverSurfer they have now opened a second store near Wembley Stadium and it sounds like they are looking to open more shops soon. But, I don't know when they plan to venture outside of the M25.
I cannot wait to visit, Ive seen some youtubers videos on their visit, its a very small store.
I’d like to go just for the novelty of it. Depending on where any other stores land it could well be a one off.
This is the future people. Congratulations everyone who pumps 8 quid a month into Bezos' pockets because this just another step in the takeover by a company who kills small businesses but doesn't give anything back.
Sainsbury's have now teamed up with Amazon to trial this technology in a Sainsbury's store in London. Judging from the article I've linked below, Amazon is apparently planning to open 'hundreds' of their Amazon Fresh stores around the country. Plus, Tesco, Aldi and other companies are also trialing similar technology. This suggests Pick & Go style technology will likely become the norm in the future. Which probably won't be welcomed by people who don't have smartphones.
