Amazon's Choice - What Is This?
Ask a Question
I'm often on Amazon .. especially for Amazon "window shopping" and adding items to my ever growing wishlist but I notice some products have Amazon's choice highlighted on top.. what does that mean? Do Amazon test it themselves and give it the seal of approval or are they the most popular product based on reviews or how many people bought it
Amazon choice is apparently highly rated, well-priced products which are available to ship immediately. I have bought a lot of these products and have never been disappointed.
I use Amazon very regularly but I'm still very sceptical regarding Amazon choice and the reviews. As a prime member, I do find their support brilliant.
Amazon Choice - sponsored - fairly obvious really .
Trust that as far as you trust their reviews .
I was always wondering what Amazon Choice meant too. Now i know lol. Thanks for the post guys!
Hi Nadiaparveen
If you prod around Amazon’s Choice a bit more, you’ll discover:
- Amazon’s Choice is not a sponsored label.
- Companies cannot pay to have their products listed as an Amazon's Choice.
- To be selected for Amazon’s Choice, the products must be popular items available through the Alexa interface, highly rated (by customer reviews), in stock and available for delivery, and typically sold at a discount to RRP.
- Amazon’s Choice products are selected by an algorithm (rarely, if ever, by humans) - see some of the criteria for selection above.
- Each Amazon’s Choice product is linked to a specific search term, such as ‘Lego Friends’ (Currently Amazon’s Choice for the 'Lego Friends' search term is the LEGO 41426 Friends Heartlake City Park Café). So whilst there are lots of Lego Friends products, only one can be linked to that specific ‘Lego Friends’ search term at any one time.
- Hovering over a product’s Amazon’s Choice label reveals the specific search term that the product has been linked to.
- Whilst Amazon’s Choice is a useful tool guiding you towards the top-sellers that are highly rated by customers on Amazon, it’s not infallible (that's robots for you).
Personally I think looking at the Amazon Customer Reviews is a more useful guide, and that the reviews are generally very reliable when there are hundreds or thousands of them.
That said, here’s some tips:
- If you click on the ‘number of ratings’ and scroll down the page, a bar graph will be displayed, revealing more information, and underneath it, customer ratings by feature (see the examples below)
- On the bar graph, click on the one and two star reviews to reveal the negative comments and check if there are any common problems with the product. That’s useful to know if you are spending a lot.
- When reading the Customer Reviews it’s worth noting that ‘Top Reviews’ is the default view, but the reviews are often several years old. I find selecting to view the Reviews by ‘Most Recent’ instead gives me the most up to date view. As you can see in the image below the default 'Top Review' is from 2018. Switch to 'Most Recent' and you can read lots of current reviews from December 2020!

Johnny Thankyou so much for explaining all of this, I understand it much better now .. i will definitely checkout recent reviews going forward
I can’t say I’ve paid any attention to Amazon’s choice, but that’s usually as I’ve not needed anything from them. But thanks for highlighting
