Ancestry DNA / Genealogy

Ask a Question

Has anyone here done a Ancestry DNA test? If so what was your experience and how useful did you find it to be?

Looking for personal experiences of it really. I'm debating buying one to potentially answer a family question on my grandmother's paternity.

I would love to do this, actually I've been trying to work out how to get my DNA on a DNA database, if someone was adopted and was looking for a relative, even a distant relative, I'd love to be able to give them some answers if possible. If that means supplying my DNA I'd be happy to.

Sadly many fakes out there so I'd need to know the official places to go, I'm not sure if Ancestry offer this service. I'd be interested to see if any people respond here too, but also loads of fake 'relatives' around too, after money etc. (I have no money, I'm not worth it 🤣 )

I'm never sure how much I believe - you are 1/9 irish, 1/9 german etc. But I guess they are more accurate now that DNA is improving.

I know a lot of the pet DNA ones are pretty inaccurate especially those you have to send a photo of the pet too 🤔

Please do let us know if you do get one and how it worked for you.

DeBunny A few years ago a distant family member gave me his research of my grandmother's metarnal ancestry. Iv discovered very recently due to a marriage cert I unearthed that he actually had us attached to the wrong family. I can see how he did (very similar names/ area). I think he made assumptions rather than properly researched. Anyways it's sparked my interest in her paternal side. Iv requested a dna kit as a Christmas gift so fingers crossed.

I did it a few years back. It’s expensive for what it is. Didnt learn anything I didn’t already know

PayItForward Yes, I think if you already know everything it's not worth it. In this case I have zero to go on so worth an attempt.

I’ve always been intrigued to try it just to get some info but not sure it’s worth the money tbh for what it actually is tbh

I did the 23andMe a while ago. The normal price is £179 (the complete one including health+), but you can find it on Amazon for £79 on special sales, like Black Friday on the way.
