Anyone Hail from Scotland? UPDATE
Other
Can any of you Scots Lads and Lasses answer my query. I am determined to finally get up to your part of the world next year, it has been a long held ambition and must do it before I am too old.
However, I have heard that Scotland can be quite full of midges/gnats at certain times of the year and and I suffer badly from bites. Can you tell me the months I should probably avoid visiting. Thanks in advance.
Edit: Well I have just booked it and will be in Bonny Scotland next Easter. Looking forward to seeing your lovely country.

This is the holiday if anyone is interested.
Midges start coming out in late May, but the ones that bite come out in early July. It depends on where you go in Scotland as to how bad they will be. Avoid early morning and early evening and humid areas. They are worse in the countryside. Get some Avon so soft, it works wonders against midges.
Hi lynibis I live in the highlands of Scotland right at the top end and we get the midges. But its like Mrscraig say it's were you go. Some place are really bad and some place don't get many. I all so use Avon skin so soft and it works for me. And teetree Wripes all so helps has well. You get them in the pound shop. Where are you thing of going in Scotland. ☺
MrsCraig nicolajaynehend thanks so much to both of you for the advice, I will certainly get some avon so soft.
We have a company here down south called Lochs and Glens. They take you by coach, half board, nice hotels (about 6) and even include excursions, such reasonable rates. They have many and varied trips throughout the year for 5, 6, 7 or 8 days. I am fancying one which does the most castles and I would love to visit some Outlander places.
I was thinking of April through to June.
There is a website if you fancy a look as you may have an idea of the best choice. Thanks again.
Hi lynibis you are very welcome. Your trip sounds lovely. There are some lovely parts of Scotland that I've not seen yet. I would like to see were harry potter was made in the highlands. Once you been you will want to come back. We have some lovely old house has well has the very old castles. And it's steeped with history which I love and I know you all so love it. There some working museums and There are all so fights that they put on over the summer months. All people dress up. I've been to one and I enjoyed it very much. At night time to finish the day they put fire works on. But it was a very long day but I enjoyed it. Some of there show start very early. But I know you will enjoy your holiday here in Scotland next year. Please keep me up to date to were you are going. ☺
Sounds lovely nicolajaynehend and thanks so much for your input. I will definitely come back to this thread when I have made a decision.
Lynibis I for got say at some of these show you can eat what they had in the old days. I enjoyed the pork that was done over a open fire. But I did not Try the pigs head trotters or sheep's eyes. One thing I did enjoy and it was a long cue but worth was they cooked chicken in hay and herbs. Not sure how they did it but it was lovely not dry. Would eat it again. ☺
Sounds good nicolajaynehend I love my food. I would love to see a re-enactment of something like a battle and old fashioned food etc. I have read loads about Robert the Bruce and even as a Sassenach I was so glad he got the better of the English. Edward Longshanks was a nasty bit of work!
Lynibis they have battles from easter to September. They have old fashion side shows. Food. And things you can buy and take home with you. But like I said its a long day and you have to cue for every thing. But it's a very good day and something you will never for get. Like I said I've been to one. And the battle was very good. And lot of work go's in to these shows. You all so see ladys sitting at a spinning wheel turn the fleece in to wool. You can buy things like hats jumpers gloves. But it's very dear. They all so how huts that they live in. It was just a earth floor a fire in the middle and blankets around the sides. Yes I think you enjoy your hoildays and come back. ☺
it depends where you are staying, if you are near water, like in a cabin on a lake, between May - August, you will be eaten alive otherwise, they really don’t bother me and I’m English... clegs (horse flies to the English) are the horrible little creatures that give the worst bites, they are bad at dusk in the summer, especially in damp weather and in the countryside
Unfortunately all the hotels seem to be among lochs and woodland but I think maybe April will be my choice. I will take plenty of insect repellent and the tea tree wipes. I guess all pleasure comes with consequences lol. Thanks for the info.
Lynibis you need some Avon Skin So Soft for the midges, not sure what repels clegs though.. maybe pack some bite and sting cream! Enjoy your holiday, scotland is a beautiful place
sarahgreen15 yes I will make sure I am well armed and protected as I do seem to get nasty reactions to bites, thank you for your advice.
I grew up in Inverness, the highland hotel is very nice. I know all the places that you are going to visit. They are all wonderful, very beautiful and very interesting. You will have an amazing time.
15/07/2018 · Scotland is definitely a country. If anyone from FIFA comes sniffing round, definitely. England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales are definitely countries and enter national teams to the World Cup and other sporting events including Rugby - now bugger off.
This was taken directly from Google but I assure you I am not responsible for the last two words!
I did, the above is what I got, did you not read it?@dimelow06. I do not swear, it was on the Google paragraph.
There was only one article that argued it may not be a country out of loads that said it was. I picked the funniest.
Hi Lynibis I very happy for you. I do hope you have a lovely holiday and the weather is good to you. All the place you are going I've been. Oban is lovely it's on the coast. The food is lovely. A lot of seafood . It can be cold there because you are right by the sea, so wrap up. And you will love loch Ness. And don't for get to look for nessie. And when you are at the castle just take your time going down the steps they are very steep. And if it's been raining can be silppy. You will love Inverness. They have a castle in the heart of the town. And you can go up and look at around inside and out. It was the court house. But now the court has been move to a new place. Inverness is were I go shopping. But it's still a 2hour drive there and back. Once again have a very lovely holiday.
Everyone is saying how lovely it is and I am getting very excited. Thanks so much for the advice. I actually went out today and bought a really nice pair of walking boots, some insect repellent, tea tree wipes so am getting prepared lol.
I've visited close to Loch Ness and Inverness, beautiful part. I'm half Scottish but hail from Glasgow side. You'll have to let us know next year how it goes
