Update Anyone Help with Paying PayPal Please
Ask a Question
Hi all happy valentines, am after a little help with PayPal.
Seller has offered to post item on gumtree to me but it’s PayPal how do I know this is safe
What service on PayPal do I use I won’t to treat the kids but nervous that I get scammed it’s £300
If you pay with PayPal ‘goods and services’ (rather than ‘friends and family’) you have protections in case anything goes wrong
My daughter had a problem with something she bought on depop she had used PayPal. She raised the issue with PayPal and got her money back.
Imnotcheap thank you am nervous that would happen said can pick up now but said too short notice making me think and only been a member 2 days
There could be a genuine reason why it's too short notice but like you I would be wary. PayPal is definitely the best way to pay for it. Use the services and goods option as it means you are protected if something goes wrong. I have never bought an expensive item off gumtree or any other online marketplace as like you I'm wary of being scammed.
Ann1984 gumtree used to have a service where you could rate and review buyers and seller, they must have gotten rid of it. I have noticed that on fb marketplace. 3 different people all living in exactly the same area all seeing the same 4 mirrors and all using the same amazon photo and selling for more thanthe price on amazon! Definitely dodgy
I would be a bit weary of using Paypal with Gumtree, only last week I was selling a brand new vacuum cleaner and had a scammer trying to get me to sell it using Paypal, apparently the buyer wanted to buy for their cousin and was happy with the ad and was willing to pay the full price and send a courier for it, the scam would've worked with me sending them my Paypal details and address, they would've then sent a fake Paypal email saying that I had received funds even though I hadn't and I would've handed the goods over to the courier and lost them, the scammer might even be brazen enough to suggest that they'd overpaid me and asked me to return the deficit and I would've lost some money into the bargain, I gave it a wide berth.
pato I've had someone trying that scam on me before. I was selling my wedding dress. The woman was also buying for her cousin and wanted it sent by courier. She claimed she had sent me the money via PayPal and sent me a fake email from PayPal. She said that I needed to pay the courier before the PayPal funds would be released and sent me bank account details of some man to send £300 to! She said once the courier was paid the money would be released by PayPal. I know straight away it was a fake PayPal email and told her that there was no way the courier fees were that much, she claimed she was paying extra insurance for the item. I've used couriers before, it would have cost £20, maybe £30 and told her that courier companies don't have bank accounts with a man's name on them, that she was a scammer and I had reported her to Gumtree and PayPal and was keeping the conversation as proof. I never heard back from her after that.
I don't use gumtree anymore. I've had people pay me through PayPal when selling loads of times and never had an issue. You just need to be wary.
MrsCraig I'm always wary of scams and so far I've okay, I think if the buyer was to suggest that I was to pay the courier that would also indicate a scam, here is the email that they sent me...

Thank you for your quick response! i will want you to consider it sold kindly remove the ad as i am willing to pay your full asking price because i need to buy it for my cousin asap, i have read through the advert and i'm totally satisfied with it,sadly i would not be able to come personally to collect due to my hearing loss and I'm just recovering from heart surgery so I'm home-bound.I have a courier agent that would help me to pick it up at your preferred location after you have received your money and i'll pay you via PayPal today. Where is the pick up location so that i can inform the courier agent about it now?
I never responded to that message.
I'm really glad to hear that you didn't get scammed, and of course not everyone is out to scam you, I'm just weary when it's such a high amount.
