Anyone Ordered from OnBuy?

Ask a Question

Hi, I've seen a few things on OnBuy (mostly stocking filler bits) but I've never ordered from there before. The site raves about its trustpilot reviews but I know these can be fake reviews. Anyone ordered from there? Experiences?

Thank you

I've ordered quite a few things from them and I've been impressed with the way they operate. The site, itself, doesn't sell anything but acts as an agent. That would normally rings alarm bells but they monitor the sales and keep the buyer up-to-date with the transaction. If the seller hasn't dispatched quickly enough (in the site's opinion) then the buyer gets informed. I had my very first deal from them cancelled and refunded with recommendations of other sellers with identical item options. During the summer I bought a pair of recliners but the wrong colour was sent. I was quickly connected to the seller who apologised, offered swift collection and replacement or a percentage taken off the price. Two transactions, out of twenty, dealt with quickly to a good conclusion. Perhaps I've been fortunate.....

I haven't, but my mum ordered a sofa bed from them and said she was quite happy with it.

Thank you, I wasn't sure whether it was trust worthy. I may order some small things at first to see how it goes. Is it China based?

It's UK based - it's worth going on to the site and reading their blog and the list of partnerships. The paypal option is always a comfort too.

This from the site:-

I was scammed by a seller on onbuy selling goods far too cheap. I ordered a camera and got party whistles and action camera and got an umbrella. I used paypal protection and got fully refunded after showing them photographic evidence of what I'd been sent. Onbuy customer service was pretty much useless and made no sense at all and my reviews of the company that scammed me were not published on the site. They told me it was a computer error and was corrected now but I checked and the scam was still operating with items at the wrong price etc. So zero confidence in Onbuy customer service and integrity but the use of Paypal means you can get your money back if scammed. The fact you can't leave very negative reviews makes their review system pointless though.

I don't like ebay but you can pretty much leave any review you like of sellers and have left very negative reviews of sellers on occasion. Of course ebay doesn't allow negative feedback of buyers you can write negative text but you can't make it seen as a negative comment so you have to search the positive comments for negative text reviews of buyers. Many buyers are completely dishonest on ebay sadly.

I still use Onbuy of course because of the paypal protection and have placed one order since being scammed, with a different seller with no issues.

BonzoBanana That protection is good, but PayPal's recent sketchy actions have made me decide to close my account, and many others, too.

PayPal is EMI rather than FSCS/FDIC so even less of a reason to trust them with our money.

PayPal will try to sneak that policy again in the future. It was no accident.

Careful if you have a "misinformation" opinion, Bonzo.

P.S. Venmo is also owned by PayPal.

PhilipMarc What do you mean by a 'misinformation' opinion? I can only describe what happened but that doesn't mean everyone will get the same level of customer service by onbuy customer services but that was my experience. I often hear of stores where people get very poor customer service and my experience is great of the same store, customer service can be a bit of a lottery.

Essentially, something they don't agree with and would charge customers $2500 if people just went along with it.

PhilipMarc Oh I see that sort of misinformation, people sending money to people who have opinions outside the norm. I.e. could be very leftwing or rightwing opinions and particular opinions that are controversial. Patreon payments etc. I wonder how they would police misinformation though it would seem to be very labour intensive reading through such material before they could form an opinion. This is probably lip service and just the more extreme cases that reach the media will be looked at and get blocked payments.

Hopefully someone ordering a camera and getting plastic party whistles instead wouldn't incure issues with paypal. I literally took a screen grab of the onbuy order page showing what I'd ordered and an image of the goods sent with the packaging it came in. I was refunded immediately pretty much. The issue was Onbuy's defence of the company when clearly they were sending out low value items in place of high value items to multiple people. No one was getting high value items instead of low value items. Even after I was refunded they were still advertising high value items at prices below normal prices so it was clear more customers would have been sent low value items. Onbuy's defence of the seller was utterly irresponsible in my opinion. They should have instantly prevented the seller from selling anything until the issues were resolved. I'm left with a lasting opinion that Onbuy's own customer service is not fit for purpose.

I actually ordered something a couple of weeks ago from OnBuy and it was delivered in 2 days, I was really impressed actually. I paid via PayPal so if I had any issues I had that to fall back on.

Paypal are great for non-deliveries or goods not as described. The issue is down the line if the goods are faulty lets say in the 11th month they aren't interested. I think by going through a payment processing company like paypal you do forego your credit card protection rights. However most credit cards are more difficult to deal with. I know my Halifax card is poor for purchase protection. Very long winded and awkward.
