Has Anyone Used a Piemaker?

Ask a Question

I've just been chatting with a friend who was raving about her pie-maker! Now I do cook most of my meals from scratch but just can't be bothered with pies though we love them! I'm a cautious shopper so won't rush out and buy anything. Has anyone ever used one and what are the pros and cons please? The one she has is just over Β£30 at Amazon. I'd soon save that back by making my own over buying pies but just how much faff are they?

Another useless gadget . I presume you have an oven and a pie tin ? Why do you need another useless gadget that will gather dust in the deepest bowels of your kitchen cupboard ?

Golfforall I agree with you about useless gadgets BUT .... we are in rented and the oven is appalling - in need of replacement .... I don't use it .... and I suppose if I'm honest it sounds easy ... I swear by my Slow cooker and my Remoska and Hot Air fryer which are used week in week out so we'll see if anyone out there has any thoughts. Ha ... I'm assuming you don't have one hee he .... do you make your own pies?

BORDERJOE No I leave the making to Pukka , they are much better at it than me πŸ˜‹. You could make pies in your airfryer (its just a glorified mini fan oven after all ) .

Wash and save the aluminium pie thingies that your pies come in and fill them with whatever you fancy . A pie maker is after all only a toastie maker with pie shaped holes 🧐.

Golfforall now see that's the kind of idea I come here for ...and I'm asking myself why I didn't think of it! (no response please🀣 )...Thnaks.

I don't really see the point in them myself. All you really need is a basic flan tin, an oven and all the necessary ingredients. Mmmm.. I can taste a homemade pie right now. πŸ˜‹

I suppose you could have a piemaker as an emergency gadget though.

We had a homemade pie for tea last night but I just done it in the oven. I can sympathise with your oven ours gave in during first lockdown. We in rental but its council so have to get own oven ect.

The landlord was great about replacing the hob wrecked by the previous tenant and I guess I'd rather muddle on than risk a rent raise to cover things like the oven. We don't want to buy one and then end up being asked to move when they decide to sell up ... leaving us with an oven we may not need in future places. Yep I fancy a pie but not that much!πŸ˜‚

Mightymoo hey neither had I! Initially I thought it was a wind up and had to Google! Needless to say if it was our own place then we'd get a decent oven but who knows how long we'll be here. Cake baking is also a bit of a fiasco and of course a pie maker doesn't fix that πŸ˜› .... combi micro is under consideration too.

We have homemade pies regularly, i would never even consider a pie maker they are so simple in the oven. I didn’t even know there was such a thing 🀣

BORDERJOE How about a tabletop oven, you just plug in, then you can do all 'oven' things. Mum had one with a hob similar to https://www.robertdyas.co.uk/tower-12l-mini-oven-black?gclid=CjwKCAiAjeSABhAPEiwAqfxURfgfF_rH05LigOFLGVg6ybsHybd3ixTVotVW_TQkvF64SHYknwvbEhoCjWgQAvD_BwE

Its so easy, eaven easier with shop brought pastry

Just pop in a pyrex add gravy

Pop the pastry on, egg wash and oven bake.

Does a pie maker do hot water crust ?

Gems wow yours looks truly fantastic!!!!! I can't see why the pie maker shouldn't do hot water crust - tbh I hadn't considered that type! I'm going to give the oven another go and hope it comes up and stays to temperature and doesn't lose its rubbers..... it definitely makes cooking fun! I doubt I'll be posting a pic but will give 'feed'back hee hee.πŸ€ͺ

If its old give it enough time to warm up. Always preheat your oven. I normally switch on at 200 and drop down to 150/180

Open the door slide it in quick and shut the door

Good luck πŸ‘

Update to all who helped! ... I've cracked it ...well...almost! Steak and kidney pie prepared in slow cooker yesterday. Then I had a bash at my own short crust pastry and it was all edible!!! ... I need to make more gravy next time but I think cooking it overnight was the problem as I couldn't monitor the liquid levels. No piemaker required .... as now have a Combi Microwave. Thank for all the ideas!
