Has Anyone Watched REIGN on Netflix?

Other

This is a strange one and despite my love of history I can't make up my mind whether I like it!

The music is modern, the clothes are definitely not of the period, the dialogue is not of the time and I am not even sure whether it is historically accurate. It is about Mary, Queen of Scots, while she was at the French court prior to becoming a widow and reclaiming the Scottish throne.

Hooked now, but still annoyed with it if that makes sense. Anyone else seen it and what do you make of it? History with a modern twist to appeal to younger audiences?

Apologies for resurrecting this topic. Despite being riveted to this series, I am also annoyed by its total disregard to historical facts. I have decided it is basically an historical soap with a few facts thrown in for good measure. It is such a typically glossy Hollywood production and although set in the brutal 16th century the characters act in a very 21st century manner with women travelling unaccompanied, and emotional forgiveness and acceptance not known back then. The main part that galls me is that Mary and Francis are depicted as politically aware and clever adults but Francis became king at 15 and died at 16!

I tried to watch it and couldn't get past the first episode, the modern music and costumes were just too jarring

Exactly! But must admit I wanted to see how it would pan out and now I am hooked. I just have to keep telling myself to enjoy it as a historical drama that bears no relation to reality!

I saw this topic and just knew the poster would be you. I watched 2 series of Reign and found that we were picking holes in it, endlessly - it quite took the concentration away from the plot. I loved the costumes but was well aware they were not accurate and loved the modern music. (the standard lute, cornet and virginal would have alienated the average viewer) The jewellery was on another level (I make jewellery) and I spent most of the time rough-sketching ideas from the programme to interpret later. I think it was aimed at a younger audience and many of my younger friends absolutely love it. Beautifully presented but just not for me. I hope your back has improved.

Ha ha, who else angemski! You are absolutely right, youngsters who find it might well get into it and maybe pique their interest enough to read up on it. I certainly did as I don't know much about the French history of that period, although a fair bit about Mary.

I have just finished series two and will continue to watch but with the mindset of watching an historical drama.

Glad it has inspired you with jewellery, do you have a website?

Back much better thanks, first day without painkillers but am now totally bunged up with chest infection and head cold type symptoms lol. Never mind, should be fine by weekend, thanks for asking.

Lynibis Doesn't sound as though you're much better - husband is the same so I've escaped to a spare room and tied a bell around his neck, bless him. 😆 To be fair I watched the first series of GOT and wasn't thrilled but continued and definitely couldn't understand the charm of 'One foot in the grave' until everyone raved about it. Ended up loving both. I believe the characters have to develop and 'grow on us' before many of us commit our time. Reign, on the other hand had so many discrepancies that I gave up. I let the website slide a couple of years ago when family health needed my time. I still have a fb page but haven't posted in ages - the stash of equipment is enormous and I got fed up with packing away potentially dangerous tools when family and friends came round. Fingers crossed that you improve quickly.

I loved it. I don't think I would've if the music was more old fashioned. The only thing I criticise about it is that despite set in the past, it has magic in it, which seems a bit farfetched.

Yes, I have just reached the part where Francis dies but was brought back to life by Delphine. Well that can't last as it is well past time for him to die. Also his brother Charles has come to take the crown and is portrayed as a teen but was in fact 10 when he became king! Just watching now as a fictional drama based on historical events.

Watched this when it first came out it was a really good show, I tried to re watch it again recently and think it has been taken of Netflix which is a shame.
