Supermarket Asda is set to enforce rules on face coverings more strictly across its shops amid the pandemic.
Customers who do not have a covering when they enter a store will be offered a pack of disposable masks that they can pay for at the end of their trip.
My nearest Asda is already hell on earth in a good day. This will make things more interesting...
Tesco other day OH forgot mask said can't come in with out one, he was offered to buy instore but he said I have no mask it's OK you get them off shelf and pay at end so lunch turned from 3 quid to 8
Ah yes, I’ve seen signs at a nearby Tesco about masks - it said if you didn’t have one, you can flag down a staff member to let them know. So that is what they’re doing, getting people to buy them. Kudos to Morrisons as they’re still giving them out for free - I thought they’d give up after week one
There is a person I know who has an app on their phone and pretends to have athema so they don't have to wear a mask. It's terrible when there are people out there who genuinely are unable to wear them. Hopefully this will stop the fakers from getting away with it
Hopefully this will ensure more people comply with mask wearing, and Asda have also finally said employees will all wear one too - about time they are exposed to so many people while working
I have face coverings (reusable ones) in every jacket , in the car , in my golf bag . Its the new normal and will be for months . Its no great inconvenience , just think of all the people who have to wear them for 8-12 hours a day , not just for a 10 minute shop .
And remember you don't need a medical grade mask , its not to protect yourself . All you need is a face covering to protect others from you .
Golfforall agreed, it's really not difficult but keeps you and others safe. And masks are readily available everywhere now so it's not hard to get hold of them.
You have that the wrong way round it is the "customers who are exposed to the staff" if the staff don't wear masks. The purpose of a mask is NOT to protect the wearer. but to protect the people the wearer encounters.
davidstockport yes I meant that staff should've been wearing masks long ago, for both their safety and as you've rightly pointed out, for others
lornaae I'm sure we'll get used to it . It'll become second nature to check we have a mask in our pocket before leaving the house . As I said anyone who moans just think of the people who now have to wear one for their full shift at work !
I have 30 odd of the washable cotton ones and as an added bonus I seem to be finding them ready washed in various shirt and shorts pockets when I hang out my washing .
lornaae But to say "both their safety and that of others" implies you might think the masks protect the wearer. It appears many people still don't realise that there is virtually no protection to the wearer, they're protected by the wearing of masks by others.
My sister who is 79 had this explained to her by her 10 year old great grand daughter and thought her GGD had it wrong until I confirmed.
The cost of extra staffing will prevent many businesses from implementing similar measures. Maskless customers could always go to other stores that don't enforce the wearing of face coverings.
We may see more scenes like this woman in a Co-op when she was asked to follow the one-way system inside the shop. I wonder what she would have done if she'd been asked to wear a face mask as well -

The government guidance regarding exemption of masks needs to change or it will cause more arguments and nut jobs like the woman in co-op on the news
My local Morrisons store have had free masks available as you enter the store or petrol station shop for a few weeks now, always hand and trolley sanitiser available at several points inside and outside the store also. I think Morrisons have done a pretty good job of dealing with this, unlike my local Asda where your lucky if you can find any sanitiser anymore. If Asda think people will take a pack of masks and and pay for at the end at their inflated profiteering prices they are deluded, lots of open packs of masks dumped by the checkouts each day
I believe you’re right. My local Asda already has plenty of problems, so they will just add this to the mix.
This is good everyone should be wearing them to keep us all safe it's the only way to win if we stick together
