Crippled by illness Dawn voice-cooper travelled to Switzerland to end her life where she, surrounded by friends and family , listening to her favourite song received a fatal dose of barbiturates Dawn had spent the last year fighting for her right to die , hoping that it would be made legal in England . Controversial topic with many opinions , what’s yours ?
I'm against Abortion, but I support Assisted Death.
A person should have the right to cease to exist if their pain makes their life living hell.
PhilipMarc I agree with you but abortion I don't believe in it myself but I don't agree with what people have been doing abortion has got to be so hard for the people who have them so that don't need the bs because of the choice they made
I totally agree with you. It would be such a hard decision to make and nobody would choose it unless they were trapped in a living hell.
We need more compassion and less judgement. If someone of sound mind decides they cannot continue to suffer, they should have the right to decide to die, IMO. It is their life, their body - and should be their decision.
I have taught this subject for years. We looked at the different forms of assisted dying, the laws in the countries that allowed it, religious and non religious arguments for and against and case studies. It was important that pupils understood all sides of the subject so they could make an informed decision.
Until you or a loved one is in that situation I think it would be very hard to know exactly what you would do, but you should have the option to decide for yourself
MelissaLee1963 murder is killing someone who doesn't want to died helping someone died who is in pain can't do anything for themselves and they can't make a decision on whether they want to continue there life the way there are is wrong
I support it. After watching Mum 'die' for years with PSP when all she really wanted to do was actually die is very hard. If she could have taken herself to Switzerland she would have, she was of sound mind but the body was not able.
I think it is disgusting that we are all expected to 'be alive' when we want to die as we are not 'living'. (The difference between being alive and having a decent life) The law should definitely be changed to allow people some dignity!
Just consider that if an animal was seriously ill we would 'put it down' and end its suffering, why not offer the same dignity to humans if that's what we choose.
I'd support it. There should of course be many laws around it & several doctors would have to agree that the individual was not ever going to improve in health & that they were also of sound mind & had 100% come to the decision on their own ( ie: not persuaded).
SilverSurfer I can see why members of many faiths would not be comfortable due too their beliefs. Whether that's legitimate reason is down to the individual.
If it were ever to be option (unlikely imo) My main concern would be around mental health & those with depression etc trying to access hence my comment above.
Glitterandgold I agree that if it was to be made legal then it would have to be very strict , I just cant see why it cant be legal. If someone has a faith and doesn't believe in it then fine don't do it but that shouldn't effect the law
SilverSurfer Good point, other religions shouldn't worry as it won't even affect them.
Definitely in favour, I do not think we will ever get the choice in the U.K., it would be nice to visit Switzerland. The only thing that would put me off is the cost, I imagine it is not cheap.
In circumstances like this, I think it is for the best. Not only does the person get to end their pain, but the friends and relatives can support them and each other, while knowing exactly when they pass away. Thus, also taking the burden and some of the pain from them too.
Yes I do agree but there is a very fine line of how this can work my dad has dementia and is in his last stages he also has pace make and now bed bound I really do hate to see him changing every day makes me sad but he's my dad and I want him be pain free
I agree in principle but there has to be robust safe guards. We know there are some pretty awful people out there and others that are exhausted from caring for elderly relatives etc. There may be people with low levels of pain who are pressurised by relatives to choose death. There is always a sliding scale between cases we are 100% certain is the right thing to do to other cases that are borderline wrong. There is no black and white here rather a slow black to white fade with a lot of grey in the middle.
I used to work for Age Concern and dealt with many elderly people who had pretty much been abandoned by their relatives. I was a general assistant, I would sort gardens, decorate, sort minor electrical and plumbing problems and generally help them keep their homes in order. Most elderly people had good relatives but some were just horrible selfish people. I would want to protect elderly people who had relatives like that who basically are just waiting for them to die and get a payout. Some of these elderly people were not strong minded they were easily persuaded which is why so many con artists prey on the elderly. It's nice to be idealistic but we have to be realistic there will be situations where the right to die will be abused, manipulated etc.
I'm still for it in principle but we need a carefully planned procedure. Personally I would like it to be instigated by a doctor who either believes the patient is suffering or has received a request by the patient directly and then relatives and other professionals are consulted. If people have to go to Switzerland that is a failure on our part I feel as surely a huge ordeal for such a person. That should never happen.
You don’t let your pets suffer surely your loved ones should have the same consideration.
I think it should be freedom of choice and if the person is suffering and only going to get worse it should be there choice while they are able to do it as We are kinder to animals as we do not let them suffer a human would be confined to a bed put on life support and kept alive and for what only to prolong life then the doctors decide to turn life support off when it could have been done earlier and not cost the nhs a fortune
tara73ziva agree , some people are in so much pain with a terrible quality of life I wouldn’t won’t that
In our society we would not let a animal suffer but will let a human die in agony losing their dignity more by the day I’ve seen it with a aunt and a friend both wanted to die when they still had some dignity but they suffered for months with no chances of recovery
I always thought it was unusually cruel to make people suffer we wouldn't dream of doing that to our pets. As long as the individual is mentally able to choose they should be able to
If you keep someone alive in a horrendous situation like latter stages of dementia then doesn't that go against the Hippocratic oath because you are doing harm by not assisting them out of their pain?
Aenurse1 It is never easy to watch someone suffer .I watched and cared for my husband up until his last breath. He was bedbound for the last year and in great pain which was eased a little by morphine. His demise was slow and more than dis-settling but never once did he or I allow for thoughts of suicide. We both felt that there was and is a purpose in pain as well. God is the author of life and death and it is our moral responsibility to nurture and sustain it at all costs even and especially in difficult times.
SilverSurfer I will neither give a deadly drug to anybody if asked for it, nor will I make a suggestion to this effect. Similarly I will not give to a woman an abortive remedy. In purity and holiness I will guard my life and my art.

You have different views to me and others will have different views but we should still be able to choose. The only obstacle is how it can do to safeguard it getting abused and people coerced into it. Apart from that there isn’t a reason to make it illegal?

It has been watered down through the ages but the steering principle and purpose of medical practice across time was/is to Preserve life not to end it. We will have to agree to disagree on this I am afraid. I could not /will not give life or license to same.

MelissaLee1963 Yeah from the original one not the modern one. It should still be made legal and have the option to choose. Not be dictated by something that doesn’t exist.
