Another Bank Holiday Weekend

Ask a Question

So, we have had Easter, then the upcoming May Day bank holiday this weekend, and Spring bank holiday (or Whitsun as we used to call it) at the end of May.

Do you think this is too many, too close together?

Some years when Easter is later in April we have 4 bank holidays in little over a month.

Then nothing until August then another long wait until Christmas.

Do you think the bank holidays should be spread more throughout the year?

What events should be given a Bank holiday?

Dont think they would change these although I believe there was a suggestion of giving us an extra one to stimulate tourism

They should give an extra one in October

Why it’s always been like this

You can’t go changing things because it’s a long wait til the next

Don’t see the need for them in first place it’s just day off work which we get paid for. Do you think be asking same question if no pay

The May Day bank holiday was only introduced in 1978. It is a Socialist thing to celebrate workers, but is often used in Communist countries to display military might. The two bank holidays in May were disruptive when I was teaching.

It has been observed in Scotland since 1871.

gerrykelly25 I was going to say the same - it was introduced to bank workers to close up shop and do all the other jobs in the bank that they didn't have time for during the normal week, They didn't even have a break

In Ireland, an October Bank Holiday was introduced in 1977. It is usually the same weekend as the end of British Summer Time.

The purpose was to extend the summer season and to bring in additional trade in the period prior to Christmas. It is a popular addition!

I personally think there is no need for the end of May bank holiday nor the end of August one.

That should have a bank holiday every month 😂😂 I dnt mind when they are or how many there are it's just nice we have them. I'm sure they will add another when the Queen dies but I hope that's not for years to come.

I am more than happy for as many bank holidays as we can get. It would be nice to have them better spaced out and the Tuesday back at work after is always a pain as I have twice as much to do, but I'd still want to keep them!
