Barbie unveils new line of diverse dolls including one with vitiligo and prosthetic limb
THE makers of Barbie dolls are to sell a version that looks as if it has the skin condition vitiligo and another with no hair, in an effort to increase the diversity of the range.
Mattel said it wants to provide a "multi-dimensional view of beauty and fashion" and "represent global diversity and inclusivity".
Well, what do you make of this?
As with all things that are made and sold I feel it is a marketing ploy jumping on the bandwagon of political correctness.
Can they do anything right then? Don't make these dolls and they're excluding groups, not allowing kids to have dolls that look like them. Make them and they're accused of doing it just as a marketing stunt. Can't win.
MeestairChrees I don't think it is wrong but I have become cynical in my old age and I know that a room full of people in marketing always have their eye on the main chance and next big way to make money. We have so much 'stuff' in our lives and I bet we could live happily without loads of it.
Lynibis no doubt they want to make money - that's what businesses are about. But if they can also make a disabled child feel more normal, like they're not alone, then surely it's a good thing?
A lot of hospitals already give out dolls that have the same thing that children have, they have amputee dolls etc by making them available to all they are showing that it is OK to look different and can hopefully stop children bullying others that have conditions such as vitiligo or have a prosthesis. The reality is nobody is ever likely to look like Barbie anyway without plastic surgery, but to offer these, to me, can only be a good thing
In all my years I have never looked like Barbie, nor has anyone I know! I don't even remember playing with one either although I dad have a doll 
called Daphne! 
tumblespots I had a fake Barbie growing up, no way we could afford a proper one, she was slightly more realistic as a female too, as in she didn't topple over for being too top heavy
