Beales
In the News
There’s a chance that one of Britain's oldest department stores may disappear soon, along with the others who have since closed down

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of them. I guess they’re not competitive enough to keep their customers?
Lol they’re the only ones I know too I don’t think I know anyone who has that surname in real life
We have a Beales 15 miles away in Skegness. I think they are rather expensive and don't use them for shopping although they do have a quite a nice cafe.
There is one near me, but people rarely go in as it is so expensive and outdated. They've recently been having a sale (lasted nearly a year so far) as they were closing for refurbishment, even then the sale prices were dearer than everywhere else. Whilst it is sad to see shops disappear, with this one they have never moved on from a formula that stopped working decades ago and not moved with the times, plus the buildings are huge so they must pay a fortune on business rates and rent
I've never heard of them either, when i read the title of the post I wondered if it was a misspelling and was meant to say Beagles
Our local Beatles have been in our town for approx 5 years. In their sale there are some amazing offers eg.just paid £33 for a duvet which cost £125 originally. I hope they do not close because where I live we are losing so many shops and there is very little choice and it will leave a big empty space. Very sad.
Never heard of Beales the department store only Beales I've heard of are a family from eastenders.
I’ve just googled Beales. I didn’t know they had online shopping so will now browse their store.
i do hope they manage to save the store and all those employees keep their jobs.
I hope so too, as it’s always sad to see another empty shop, usually as they never get filled and then you end up with a dead high street
Beales took over the main department store in Yeovil which is Denners many years ago. I probably haven't been in the store for 20 years but its mainly fashion and cosmetics and not much there that interests me. I think Beales is more of a south - southwest type chain as it started in Bournemouth.
In a recent article they stated that their business rates were 4x their rent which seems utterly ridiculous as the rent was already sky high. Not only that but the councils often profiteer from car parking in the town centres. It's just a ridiculous situation of incompetence and utter stupidity by those in power. Ultimately we end up with Amazon benefiting who export their profits back to the USA and pay little tax in the UK which is money we can't afford to lose what with a large trading deficit and huge public sector debts which have to be paid. We need to run a successful economy with a trading surplus and pay off those huge debts which might take many decades to pay off.
It also benefits the environment if people buy clothes locally rather than have them transported back and forth from online retailers.
