Best Cake Mix
Ask a Question
Hello, has anyone found a really good chocolate cake mix? Looking for something that doesn't come out too dry. I love baking with my kids but full recipes leave my kitchen way too messy.
I know what you mean about the mess you start off with such good intentions...... I would settle for the Betty Crocker - Devil's Food Cake mix. As mixes go it's one of the better ones.
The mess has actually been putting me off doing any baking recently which is a shame since we all like it so much. Thanks for the tip, I'll try that one.
Another vote for the betty crocker devils chocolate mix and the betty crocker chocolate fudge icing its one of my faves. I also love the coffee version
Of course, the best one is to make your own.
However, as that is out of question in your case I would agree with the others and go for Betty Crocker. Some of the supermarket own brands are pretty good too.
Thanks, I think we will try it. It seems to be a very popular choice. I think we will go back to making our own once they are at an age where they don't make so much mess or at least are more capable to helping with clearing up!
ClaireF1978 I think the mixtures are great for kids as they are good starting points for them.
I found one online that is a very gooey, moist cake... the mixture was like water when it went into the oven so I was not expecting it to even be edible but it was the best chocolate cake iβve tried are we allowed to post links on here?
sarahgreen15 Any chance you could just copy and past the ingredients and method? (that way nobody can complain and we can all add the recipe to our faves - I'm guessing this is what I call a batter consistently and I love these)
For the cake:
225g/8oz plain flour
350g/12Β½oz caster sugar
85g/3oz cocoa powder
1Β½ tsp baking powder
1Β½ tsp bicarbonate of soda
2 free-range eggs
250ml/9fl oz milk
125ml/4Β½fl oz vegetable oil
2 tsp vanilla extract
250ml/9fl oz boiling water
For the chocolate icing:
200g/7oz plain chocolate
200ml/7fl oz double cream
Preheat the oven to 180C/160C Fan/Gas 4. Grease and line two 20cm/8in sandwich tins.
For the cake, place all of the cake ingredients, except the boiling water, into a large mixing bowl. Using a wooden spoon, or electric whisk, beat the mixture until smooth and well combined.
Add the boiling water to the mixture, a little at a time, until smooth. (The cake mixture will now be very liquid.)
Divide the cake batter between the sandwich tins and bake in the oven for 25β35 minutes, or until the top is firm to the touch and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean.
Remove the cakes from the oven and allow to cool completely, still in their tins, before icing.
For the chocolate icing, heat the chocolate and cream in a saucepan over a low heat until the chocolate melts. Remove the pan from the heat and whisk the mixture until smooth, glossy and thickened. Set aside to cool for 1β2 hours, or until thick enough to spread over the cake.
To assemble the cake, run a round-bladed knife around the inside of the cake tins to loosen the cakes. Carefully remove the cakes from the tins.
Spread a little chocolate icing over the top of one of the chocolate cakes, then carefully top with the other cake.
Transfer the cake to a serving plate and ice the cake all over with the chocolate icing, using a palette knife.
sarahgreen15 Brilliant. I'm a bit of a recipe hoarder, especially when they have been tested so thank you very much. Can't wait to have a go at this one.
Betty Crocker always comes out wonderfully from the oven...you can mix other flavors in the vanilla mix, color it...perfect...
I agree the devil chocolate cake mix is sooo good...yumm
