I have known my best friend since the first day of uni, so 12 years now. We did go to secondary school together but weren't close.

I have 2 other very close friends who I have known for 11 years. They are the 3 woman I can rely on for help and support and a shoulder to cry on when needed.

My friend and I have been best friends for over 35 years now. We lived next door to each other in the mid 80s and through divorces and several moves we have remained close. I have spoken about our Sunday night movie and meal together on here.

We are going on a couple of short breaks this year.

I also have two other good friends who I see for lunch and a catch up whenever possible. I prefer to have a few real friends who are always there for you (and vice versa) than dozens who in truth are not that close.

My best friend is my husband. I have a friend who I do school run with and mum's talk to up school but I don't call them friends. I like to keep myself to myself so no drama. I don't invite people to my house either is my safe place

Each to their own but I remember a time when neighbours were in and out of each others homes a lot for tea/coffee while kids at school. We could 'borrow' a bit of sugar, eggs etc. and mind each others kids and always offered 'do you need anything' if going to shops.

I believe that a lot of depression today is due not only to social media, but the lack of interaction with friends and neighbours. Women are at work all day and often have no opportunity to build upon friendships and share problems and worries. They now keep them building up inside. It is no coincidence that we now have all these campaigns telling us to talk. And let's face it, spouses are not always the best at communicating.

I met my best friend on the bus on my first day at middle school. We were 11 then & are 39 now. We meet up a couple times a month but speak constantly. I dont have that many 'friends' now. I went through a difficult & traumatic couple of years & really found out then who really cared. Theres alot of people I stopped bothering with afterwards..including family! My sister & I are close & I consider her a best friend.

Life would be dull without friends to enrich it. Family is wonderful when they all get along but friends can add another dimension and have an important role to play.

Mistrust breeds mistrust and I personally would sooner open my heart and mind, with the possibility of being hurt, than shut myself off and not give anyone a chance.
