Best Seaside Resort in the UK

Ask a Question

Doing a tour of the UK this summer where is the best seaside resort that's not full off cheap rubbish shops and grubby.

Looking for a traditional fishing village or somewhere with character.

Not blackpool

What do you think of this?

The Jurassic coast in Dorset is meant to be quite lovely. Have been to Lyme Regis and that is definitely Olde Worlde. I think Whitby has a good rep too.

Whitby is amazing.

http://ukcoastguide.co.uk/ is a good indicator of different coastal towns and what they can offer, depends which area you want to go to, sounds like my ideal holiday

Loislane I did for the first 31 years of my life, then moved to landlocked Derbyshire - idiot that I am, mind you with the flooding it looks like I am by the sea still

Loislane I've got 3 fence panels down, roof slates have come off and a leaking window as the wooden bit above the PVC frame has been washed away, all good fun

Tenby in Southwest Wales. Harbour town and seaside resort with an award winning beach. Plenty of other award winning Blue flag Beaches in the area also. Close to the Brecon Beacons National park and also close to some of the largest cities in Wales , Swansea & Cardiff

It's over 30 years since I was last there, but there are some lovely beaches around Anglesey, this at Red Wharf Bay is just one of them: Image

If your considering Scotland, St Andrew's is nice and they have the best Fish and Chip shop in scotland there.

I’ve heard Cornwall and Dorset have lots of gems dotted along the coastline. But if you want somewhere not far from London, Broadstairs is pretty. And if you go further along up to Botany Bay, that is one of my faves. Went to Leigh on Sea last summer and it’s got a bit of character, albeit a small place

I live near there and I think it is nice for an occasional visit, but like everything else if it is on your doorstep it becomes the normal. I wouldn't recommend Southend on Sea as it is exactly what the OP doesn't want lol.

Lynibis Lol definitely skip Southend altogether! I was actually amazed by Leigh on sea, because it’s not far from Southend, but it was so different - definitely less tacky! But it was still a bit rowdy with drunken kids hanging out, although that is probably in most places at the height of the summer

I'm not sure I should put forward my opinion as I enjoy slightly tacky seaside towns with arcades, cheap shops and low cost cafes etc. My favourites are Weymouth and Weston Super Mare. However Bournemouth also has a beautiful beach. I tend to favour beaches with high quality regularly cleaned sand, I'm not keen on hard stone and pebble beaches. The second division for me would be places like Sidmouth, Burnham on Sea and Lyme Regis. I keep meaning to go to Swanage but I've never been so far. I'm based in the South West so don't have to travel far to get to a beach.
