Boots New Decision to Withdraw Pill Boxes for Elderly . Thoughts?

In the News

Boots criticised over new decision to withdraw pill boxes for the elderly. What are your thoughts? It can be very dangerous for those living alone. It's cheaper to have people live independently and if you take this away, then elderly and visually impared with need assistance and thus potentially leading to more costs for the government? (By means of carers etc)

I listened to the news reporting this, paid carers aren’t authorised to do this but there’s nothing stopping family or friends helping. It takes up too much time at the pharmacy.

Pjran I agree with the time it takes but there are plenty of people without family? Shouldn't there be a system so only those you genuinely couldn't do without get this only. Won't be ma y in comparison to those who do have family members

Leannexxx yes thats what I was thinking but only issue is that costs thousands for the government. Homes are so expensive that is actually cheaper to stay in thier own accommodation. It's just ashame because the government should to trying to save money not cause a reaction whereby they have to spend more.

Hana12 most would have their own homes to fund their stay. I bet family would visit every couple of months to sort the medication rather than lose their inheritance.

Maybe a nurse at their go practice could organise the sorting after all most practices have a prescribing practitioner.

The goverment just don't have a clue, probably as they've never had to actually care for someone without being able to afford to pay for help. I really think the government should be paid minimum wage with no expenses and not allowed to use their saving to bail them out and see how they cope in the real world.

Midnightflower very true, they gave no clue! We work our whole life to buy a home and own it, soon as we do its sold and spent on care so then the families(children) have to start from scratch. But this causes a visious circle and people can't ever get in a better financial position. They then must buy a further home but many can't due to inflation

Hana12 we seem to be trapped in a situation where the poor look after the poor and work for the profits of the rich. There's plenty of money it's just not distributed correctly, the rich are getting rich while the poor starve.

Midnightflower 100 agree. Plenty of money but this is not distributed correctly. I once read that if food was distributed equally there would be no starving humans on the plant. Its always down to unequal distribution 😔

Hana12 I've just seen today's papers! They've got some great statistics on workers pay vs bosses. The network rail boss only earns 593k, he must be so concerned about his living costs 🙄.

Midnightflower oh no how does he put food on the table 🤑. 😳 It's actually shocking because thats more pay than the supreme court judge 😳 you can imagine how hard it is to work in the legal sector.

Hana12 He was the lowest out of the 5 they showed. The head of BT is on 3.5 million 😳! I completely agree, it's so sad that we don't value those who really work hard for our country like judges, teachers and nurses. Everything is falling to pieces but the fat cats keep getting richer somehow.

It’s actually guidance from the GPHC that boots have stopped medisure.

Some of the pills can deteriorate when mixed with other meds. Obviously when they deteriorate, the meds don’t work as effective.

It’s not the cost or the time put into making the medisure, I’ve made quite a lot over the years and it can take a good half day making them all for a set week collection.

Luckily we managed to get another pharmacy in the town to take all our patients on that have medisure.

kimcress thanks for sharing, I think the time consumption is a massive thing because pharmacy's are stretched and are always so busy.

Hana12 very, we have 3 staff and a pharmacist and a very busy store.

When we spoke to the medisure patients, most didn’t actually need them in the blister packs. So they have gone back to having them in the standard boxes.

Those dorset boxes are an essential way for monitoring the medication that the elderly need to take and they should not be doing away with them, especially as a lot of the elderly are being encouraged to take their medication by carers.
