Cruella de Vil banned from smoking

In the News

I read that in the new Cruella de Vil movie (starring Emma Stone) the lead character was banned from smoking. This is despite Cruella being famously depicted carrying a cigarette holder in the original 1961 Disney movie One Hundred and One Dalmatians.

Family-friendly Disney banned depictions of smoking on-screen in 2007.

Do you think this is correct or have we gone too far?

I can see this from both sides, as I none smoker I do not agree with smoking but on the other side this is part of the character.

HappyTravels. As an ex-smoker I think it’s good not to depict smoking as the norm. When the family watch old movies, the younger members cannot believe so many people smoked on screen

BlueEyesX do you think kids would be swayed by the ‘baddie’ smoking and take up smoking 🚬?

HappyTravels . No I don’t think kids will be swayed by Cruella smoking. I think her hair, costume, what she says and more particularly, the fact she is hunting down Alsatian puppies, is enough to show her (wicked) character. Also her name..CRUELla is a giveaway. The smoking is unnecessary. It adds nothing to the character or the plotline.

This is a step too far. Mr T and I were watching something the other day and it occurred to us that if the film was looking for 'believeability' it had to include smoking as smoking was the 'done thing' in the era that it was trying to portray i.e. during WW2

tumblespots ha, for a moment I read your comment as Mr T from The A-Team 🤦‍♀️🤣 I think it’s fine to be authentic within reason. Perhaps Disney thinks kids are easily persuaded 🤷‍♀️

It's Disney, so you wouldn't expect anything less. It will be Churchill's cigars next.

They should show her vaping. With plumes of smoke billowing out of her car window. Very on trend 🤣

It’s for kids so banning of smoking isn’t too far in my opinion.

Perhaps Disney should have offered Nicorette a product placement deal.
