British Gas Paid Someone £38,000 by Mistake, and They Couldn't Give It Back

In the News

Who said solar panels are not worth the outlay ?

British Gas paid a man more than £38,000 by mistake, and they didn't how to reclaim it.

He received quarterly feed-in tariffs, (Fit) payments for energy sold back for his solar panels.

He initially submitted a claim for £300, based on his meter reading, but he received an email stating that he was due £38,611.59 !!!

This sum was paid the next day and remained in his bank for weeks

He called them and even wrote to them, but nobody knew how to reclaim the payment

He knew it was illegal to spend money , and feared somebody would accuse him of fraud

Many weeks later the money left his account, but he still doesn't know if British Gas received it as he was not notified

I wonder if he got any interest from the money while it was in his account and if he did , whether he needs to return it ?

I once got a bill saying I owed over £11,000 for gas. I laughed as I knew that wasn't true. It got sorted. Never had that kind of money show up in my account. Let's hope it was British Gas who took it back or where has it gone?

Sherrifffroggy That's the problem S, if British Gas never took it back then someone else has, they could accuse the customer of doing it despite accounts supposedly being able to be traced

You hear of this sort of thing all the time, money disappearing into oblivion

telmel I'm glad it's not happening to me as it would be stressing me right out. Image

Sherrifffroggy You cannot win with banks S, we get stressed if overdrawn and the same if we have more in it than we should , you never got this when it was under the mattress 😃

These huge, greedy corporations have more money than sense - & as they made the mistake, I’d expect them to correct it, as well as compensate me for my troubles (I, as the customer, should never have had to worry about it)

British Gas were meant to be coming and updating our smart meters last Friday and gave us a time slot between 13:00 - 17:00hrs and if we missed the appointment they could charge us £40, had a call at 16:40 that day to say cancelled due to engineer being sick so mentioned that they had broken the contract with me and they've paid £40 into my account. Thank you BG.

I don’t work for a bank but don’t think British Gas can authorise a debt to take back that amount. Surely the customer needs to authorise their bank to pay.
