A Bunch of Website Updates! (2018)
Latest Deals
Hey guys,
We've just put an update live that is HUGE. It's mostly behind-the-scenes stuff but, to put it into perspective, we've updated 612 files and written 27,890 new things and chucked out 32,265 old things. We've done our very best to eliminate any bugs but please be on the lookout as, because we've changed so much stuff, some of those pesky critters are bound to have snuck in.
New stuff
- We've updated our help section to hopefully be a lot more.... helpful! You can access it here: https://www.latestdeals.co.uk/help If you can think of any FAQs we should add please let us know.
- Because of all the super geeky stuff below, the LD website has been on a diet and is now 50% lighter. That means it should be nice and quick when you're out and about checking LD on your mobile.
- Every time we check for new notifications we now also check to see if your point balance has updated. This should keep your point balance consistent between devices without having to refresh the page
- Sometimes the search bar was so desperate to let you clear the input it displayed two separate "X" buttons. Call us old fashioned, but we think even the most avid of search clearers only needs the one button!
- If you visited one of our retailer pages on mobile you may have noticed the "filter" bar at the top was a little out of place. As if by magic it's now correctly positioned.
- The related deals on a page were a little keen and sometimes would load twice unnecessarily.
- The "top deals/freebies/vouchers" were clearly in cahoots with related deals as they were doing the same.
- Android users and those that have opted to use our "simple" text editor were cruelly kept in the dark and not shown what the input box was for (e.g. for the Description of a deal).
- Another fix for Android users - you should now properly see error messages if there's something awry with what you stick in the text box.
- Fixed a bug that was messing up the URL of some competitions/deals shared. An example is Hello Magazine where the URL would consistently break. We've crossed every appendage that this no longer happens.
- The pagination buttons occasionally forgot the only job they had to do and freaked out. Hopefully now they always take you to the page you want to see.
- You can now properly search the chat section within a particular topic
- Sometimes the chat topic filter would display the incorrect section
- You should now properly see an error if you try to create a new chat topic with too little content
- Some of you guys have earned so many points, written so many comments and shared such a huge number of deals that the stats on the user page were becoming difficult to read. The numbers now have lovely commas (where appropriate) to make them more legible.
- We've added autocomplete attributes to the login form which will hopefully mean anyone using a password manager will have a much nicer time logging in.
- We have a few pages to encourage new members to join LD. They'd fell a little behind the rest of the site but they've now been updated to work properly.
- We've had quite a few messages from people confused after they've got a little stuck because LD remembers their category choices between visits. We're experimenting with disabling this feature and would love your feedback!
- We use a thing called a "router" that maps a URL (e.g. https://www.latestdeals.co.uk/freebies) to a certain page on the LD site. The router is spread across LD's code like a spiderweb which can make changing/updating it quite an epic task. We're happy to report we've conquered that task and now have a shiny, freshly updated router.
- Updating the router meant we had to come up with a new way to keep tabs on your scroll position. For example, you are halfway down the homepage, click a deal, look at the deal, press back. You want to return to being halfway down the homepage.
- We now "lazy load" the comment input system. The bulk of the size of a page when you visit it is our comment system - allowing you to upload images, add fancy styling, etc. It now will load on demand when you click/tap to comment.
- We've done the equivalent of Windows Update and updated all the software we use to power the LD website.
- We've updated all our systems that let me code/create/develop LD. They're much nicer, faster, prettier and wonderful now.
That's it for this update. It's mostly been a lot of house keeping to enable us to be in a position to quickly add all the new features you guys keep coming up with. I'm excited to get coding stuff that'll help you all save money and enjoy LD more
Hi Kelsey Great Work, I Can Click On Notifications That's Ok But If I Click On Comments The Page won't Load
Looking forward to seeing the upadted changes, well done that was a lot to do. So far the only negative thing I have noticed is that I am unable to post an actual comment to thank somebody for their comp post, although I can click on 'like'. I was surprised when I could post this!
Morning tumblespots sorry to hear you're struggling to comment. Could you let me know a bit more about the issues you're having? Can you type text? When does it fail? When you click "Post"? Are there any error messages? Thanks!
Kelsey I can type in the box but the 'post' button is greyed out so I have to just use the 'like' button instead?!
tumblespots Thanks Could you possibly visit this site: https://www.whatsmybrowser.org/ and hit "Send via Email" and send the details to [removed] hopefully I can then recreate the issue you're having so that I can fix it
tumblespots Awesome, thanks! Could you try refreshing the page and having another go? I think I've worked out the problem and fixed it
Kelsey So sorry for the delay I had to pop out BUT you are a STAR I went back to the post I wanted to comment on and actually made a proper comment this time. I really appreciate you fixing this for me. Thank you
Since. The update I gave not got my usual offers sent each day? Is there somewhere to get them sent again I need to reset up?
Hi AlisonCadle Could I just check if you mean the offers sent via email or by Facebook Messenger? Thanks!
Sometimes i enter notifications and it takes me to comments. If i press on share it takes me to notifications. Not all the time. Maybe one in 30
Morning Kelsey so its when i select notification it sometimes diverts me to this page. Its also sometimes diverted to dashboard. If at the drop down menu i select share then it takes me to notifications. Lol hope thats clearer. It seldom happens. If it does again woukd it be useful for me to tell you the time or any other indicator in order to examine ?
Can someone from the LD staff explain how any of these "deals" constitute as deals?
It's not even offers/discounted products but just outlets of stores which anyone can find.
Hey Rockman
These outlet store posts tick two boxes in my mind:
- Firstly, they let people know these outlet stores exist. Quite often the official outlet stores on eBay can sell products for less than on their own websites (not quite sure why/how given they must have to pay eBay a cut!). I'd therefore personally view it as a deal as it's alerting people to the presence of a place where people can potentially save money.
- Secondly, they're actually really helpful in growing the LD community (something I know you comment about and I appreciate the passion for as it's something we're always actively working on!). These posts tend to do really well in Google. People will search for "[Retailer] eBay outlet" and quite often one of Johnny's posts will crop up! After we noticed the pattern we asked Johnny if he'd be willing to create a few more - and that's how we ended up with the above examples you've found. People land on LD from Google then, before disappearing off to a deal, get asked if they want to become part of the community.
I hope that makes sense and provides some rationale as to why they're on LD. I feel either/or of the above points warrants their inclusion but the fact it's a double whammy makes it even better
Noticed today that on Deal posts we can now add a discount code to that specific box. Pretty handy 'cause sometimes I share deals like those.
Glad you approve! Still needs a few tweaks but we had lots of people missing that a code was required for a deal.
I still haven't fully worked out in my head the distinction between a deal with a code and a voucher code.
I guess for a deal with a code it's a specific product.
Whilst a voucher code is a discount across the site?
Would be useful to know the amount of deals/freebies limit so we'd know before it reaches the end of the line. Like, "You have 19/20 posts left" or something.
