I think the downside of comping can be the sense of frustration when you don't seem to win. All I can say is plod on because you will win, even if not the big one you hope for. I was lucky to win on Heart radio 2k vouchers for Dreams beds, so it does happen. Good luck and remember to do dozens or more a day.

It’s much harder to win competitions where they are posted online because there are many thousands of entrants and it costs nothing to enter.

It’s also well worth entering competitions in local newspapers and magazines for books, tickets to shows etc where you have a hugely greater chance of winning, especially where you can only enter by post. Having to buy a stamp keeps the masses away! You will have a much higher win rate.

I've won a few holidays and short breaks over the years but I've gone cold on comping at the moment so not entering anything. I think it's the whole advents thing. It's just numbers; law of averages - if you enter enough you'll win something - it's just whether it's any good or not!

I rarely enter competitions because I hardly ever win and I would earn more money using my time to actually work than the time it takes to enter all these competitions trying to win. Catch 22.
