Canada not going to the Tokyo Olympics (Update - OLYMPICS POSTPONED)

In the News

Canada has announced it won't be sending a team to the Tokyo Olympics if the games go ahead as scheduled on the 24th July.

Given everything happening around the world due to the coronavirus, it would appear highly likely that the 2020 Olympics will now be postponed for a later date.

I had been looking forward to watching them for the last 4 years, but a delay is probably the best option.

It needs a couple more countries to do the same, then postponement will be inevitable.

I think more countries will follow, it only takes one to start the ball rolling. The Olympics did not take place during the war and this is a war against an unseen, silent enemy. A bit reminiscent of War of the Worlds. It is affecting the whole world so could be deemed WW3.

I feel sorry for the athletes who have to try and continue to train as if the Olympics are going ahead. A definitive should be made, and soon, to postpone this event until safer times. It is too optimistic to think travel will be back to normal then, or even safe. Governments don’t want to politically offend Japan by cancelling as The Olympics generate so much money, but it is time to be more proactive.

Yes, the athletes have been training to reach peak performance during the scheduled dates. Most usually take a break/rest from training after the Olympics. If they still have to train for potentially months more than planned there is a greater risk of injury. Poorer countries may not have the necessary funds to cover the additional costs that rescheduling will entail. Changing the date will also wreck the events calendar for all of the sports included in the Olympics - how would that work for sports like basketball or tennis when many of the athletes also take part in other very high profile events later in the year. One positive is summer temperatures in Tokyo can be fairly brutal. A later date would mean athletes don't have to compete with soaring temperatures 🏃
