Cancel Office Parties to save Christmas?
Other
Personally I can't be doing with them. I hate going out in the cold and dark during winter. Last year our boss personally delivered gift bags containing wine, chocolates and biscuits because of the Covid situation, usually we get a free meal and drinks at a local venue.
I understand youngsters have a built in desire to party and have a good time but that died in me long ago! A large majority of our staff are well over 50 and the general consensus was that we preferred the gift bags.
Are you planning or going to an office party?
I would rather stick pins in my eyes then go to any party. My husband the same we were talking about kid’s wedding other night not that it’s for many years yet but we both laughed and agreed we just book a holiday. It’s the thought of being around so many people plus our family is basically just our household of six
I know what you mean. My granddaughter is getting married next April and selfishly I am glad they are going abroad on their own. I won't have all the faff of finding an outfit, travelling etc. I will hand over some money as a gift (They already have their own home so don't need household items) so they can splash out a bit more and enjoy their special time together.
My daughters’ company had booked the Christmas do at a comedy club but have now cancelled it and donated £10,000 to charity instead due to Covid. They hope to have a summer outdoor party for the staff instead.
That sounds like a good plan and kudos to them for such a large donation, if only more would follow their example.
I've never been on any work party there not for me where I am most offices are still closed
Not all youngsters have an in built desire to party, even when I was 18 I hated parties! I have never been to a works Christmas party. I have no desire to sit in a room watching people get drunk and listening to them moaning about work.
Yes, I didn't mean it to come across that way as I too have never enjoyed pubbing and clubbing, even as a teen. I enjoy family get togethers and a quiet drink chatting in a pub but loud music, getting drunk and behaving inappropriately is the stuff of nightmares to me.
I did enjoy our works dinners because as I said we are in the main older and we just sat around our tables eating and drinking, chatting and enjoying seeing those we don't often work with. There was no dancing or loud music and people left when ready.
A lot of my problem is laziness. Once I bother to get ready and get out I am usually ok if it is a quieter occasion.
Lynibis I can't stand clubbing! I used to work in a pub but luckily the locals were tame and the only music was from the occasional use of the jukebox.
I worked in a school so there was a range of ages. There was a lot of drinking and a lot of inappropriate behaviour at work parties.
I went to a Christmas dinner at my head of departments house but it was literally just our department and it was very sophisticated.
wow the sound of a gift bag seems like a great idea especially as not all people at work enjoy the same things, still the gesture is nice.
I am not planning to go to a Christmas party with work, I used when I was working in Leeds, even though we had to pay for it ourselves, as it was normally at lunchtime so I got a long lunch out of it
But due to social distancing its too complex, to arrange anything.
Im not up for a party, but this year I am looking forward to a meal out with the team as we have not all met up in person since March 2020 which is too long. video meetings are not the same - and we actually have a few new people in our team that I have never met. It also coincides with the ending hopefully of my self imposed isolation as my wife should be out the other side of her treatment by then. We are actually looking to start some office working in the new year so this is a nice way of getting together before that happens. I believe some are going night clubbing afterwards but not for me!
