What I did was check comparison sites first, then armed with my best quote, called Chris Knott car insurance, who specialise in classic and modified, as well as people in car clubs (these kind of car owners tend to look after their cars, so they can usually give you a better quote).

You're probably thinking that doesn't sound like you, but doesn't matter...

Find an online forum dedicated to your car model and join it - tell them you're part of it - they'll probably ask for your username there. Hopefully that results in you getting the cheapest quote!

I always check comparison sites and compare the cheapest with my current provider‘s renewal quote.. i usually phone my provider and ask them what the cheapest they will do is, usually they match what the cheapest quote has been and i stay with them for the ease of it.
