Cashless Society
Ask a Question
Happy for cashless society?
Or reluctant to go all in?
The only thing that makes me want cashless is when you find landlords insisting on paying in cash. Thankfully moved on from that place.
I do love a good piggy bank to throw change at.
In rural areas and stores that have card machines (due to commission), they only accept cash. Even MasterCard isn't used absolutely everywhere, but in most places.
I actually havent used a note for over a year now!
I have coins in the car for tolls etc but havent used them either except for shopping trolleys!
It’s not cashless all over. I know lots of places that are cash only still
I prefer cashless
I don't use cash much but there are still places that are cash only, not many, but some who are adverse to modern tech
I rarely pay for anything with cash, but always like to carry some as a precaution. There are an increasing number of places that don't accept cash, which is a risk if they have issues with their card readers
Often use cash for smaller purchases such as a Newspaper, bottle of milk, lunchtime sandwich,. pay the car parking etc.
I still use cash for certain things, like when I take the bus, but most of the time I use my card. I think having cash is still good, especially for teaching children about money.
Even if you want to pay by cash sometimes just so you can see money going out, you are sometimes reluctant to use it yourself when you see a line behind you, just to speed up the process.
I split my spare money in half and have half as cash and half left in the bank for bigger purchases. Like someone said in another post I like putting change in a piggy bank
Im not bothered either way. Card makes life easy. Also less germs being spread by the handling of money. Especially cold and flu.
I go to a restaurant local that is cash only, they tell you as soon as you arrive - Also my gym is an independent gym and is cash only. I would adapt if I had too and so would these places but I think it would be a shame to eradicate cash all together.
I very rarely use cash because i dont carry it unless i know im going somewhere that i will need it - like with my son to his rugby games on the weekends to buy a drink. I would definately not pay a landlord in cash though that just screams dodgy. How can you prove youve paid your rent?
I rarely use cash anymore as its so much easier to just use my card - but I don't think this is the case for everyone, don't think everyone would be happy if this change were to be made
Just heard about what CBDC and that's got me worried. It essentially turns your money into vouchers.
PhilipMarc This is unsettling put across as something positive to better our lives but it doesn't seem so...
I love money boxes, coins in jam jars and money you can count in and out of your pocket. Cashless cards sneak up behind you unseen until you check your account and see you have only £3.29 left lol.
I prefer cashless as it gives me a clear record of what I have spent, but I also like gold. Production cost, counterfeit money and tax evasion are some good reasons not to have cash.
I don't want to live in a cashless society, where everything I spend can be watched and what happens if something goes wrong with the bank and you can't use your cards.
Sorry just cash for me still like my bank book and going into bank I have no self control over my card spending as u don't always remember what you've bought and always ask for receipts
Cash for me for small purchases and card for expensive purchases. All the tradesmen that I use only accept cash in hand. A cashless society won't catch on.
I have not used cash for a good few years, I don't carry cash other than if I remember to put it the car a £1 for a shopping trolley. Personally I would rather go cashless as I'm already there
ch7leach A cashless society means you have even less privacy and your money is turned into vouchers where they decide what you're allowed to buy.
Does that sound good to you?
I'm so tired of the West treating its people like cattle.
We use cash a lot, around here in rural areas we lack a reliable phone connection to even connect the payment machines (they are always 'going down'). Recently at a local craft fair no-one could connect to get payments to go through. The chip shop only takes cash etc. We would be lost without it round here. Unless a full phone connection is available everywhere in the country it's not going to work. I usually only get texts after a day has passed by....
There is a lot of positives about cash, the main one being people spend what they have rather than constantly borrow. Many societies are still cash focused and there is a lose connection with less personal debt when people use cash more. Japan and Germany are more cash orientated economies where as we like the US are much more likely to make impulse purchases using credit cards.
What about the poor buskers on the streets, how can you reward them with your credit card ?
And the children, do you give them their own card and top it up with their pocket money ?
There are certain times a card is not feasible
The only real positive i see is there would be no more ATM or bank robberies with no cash available
telmel There's a study that says people who use CC don't have the same emotional effect as a debit card or cash would have because it's not their money, and I agree.
However, I remember when I first got my CC that I only used what I'd pay at the end of the month and it kind of scared me to use it. I was incentivized to use them by my family.
Nowadays, if possible I always use cash or a debit card than a CC so I don't owe money to someone even if temporarily. Rewards/cashback? Got them via my Chase card.
Can't go back in time, just learn from those mistakes.
PhilipMarc I only use a debit card P, i try to use my own money if i can , i have never want to use credit through a card, if i haven't got it i wont buy it , with the past exception of a house and mortgage etc
I know many people use them to their advantage by paying them off before the due date and getting rewards for switching etc , but i have never got drawn into this
Car hire can be a problem, not that i use it much, i just find a company that accepts a debit card
telmel Impressed with your generous nature. My children all have accounts with debit cards, with more in than my current account they should be giving me pocket money. They get money paid direct to their accounts from us and grandparents, if they received cash they would hand it to me and say put this in my account. No cash at school or college for lunch or break just parent pay on a card, that we top up.
Thanks H, i am out of touch with this kind of thing, it was just giving cash in my day, kids are so savvy now with their own accounts , i am impressed
We have places around here that are cashless and some that are cash only. I tend to use both. Mainly as I do shopping for someone else.
I am very happy to cashless. I have not used cash for so long but did the other day to buy some balloons in my local post office, it was like I was handling foreign currency.
Did a big shop in Aldi once and it would not take the card as payment so we had to dash to the nearest cash point which was in the town couple minutes drive away
Lots of takeaways chippys etc only deal in cash it’s strange seeing signs up sometimes stating Cash Only !
When covid was prominent it was Card Only
Debit cards are very convenient to use but how are you going to buy stuff if there are power cuts or problems with the banking system? Having notes and coins at home and in your bag is wise backup. What use is crypto and virtual money if you can't access it when you really need the most? We need to keep cash and coins until they become worthless then we start to barter.
I'm happy for a cashless society as I rarely have cash however I think it's unfair to small businesses if they're having to pay high amounts for card reader and charges, so I don't mind when they have a minimum spend of £5 for example
miaclare19 Cashless society isn't just about going from cash to cards, they're looking to control our money and make it "expirable."
Just search for CBDC - Central Bank Digital Currency
Energy cap soaring and now this? They want to make our lives miserable.
If your money as vouchers and expiring doesn't bother you, then nothing will.
I hope CBDC doesn't see the light of day, but the West just keeps getting more absurd.
