Catalunya is now an independent country!

News

So happy for them that they're now independent and can run things like they've been wanting for ages. This means, there's now a new European country (and without the EU shackles). 😄

Let's hope it works out. They are the richest part of Spain so the federal government is not going to take it lightly.

The conversation will turn nasty though if you bring up Brexit, for some reason it always does. People seem incapable of having courteous debate nowadays.

Madrid is imposing direct rule over the region. I fear there will be battles ahead. Reminds me of the Scottish debate with regards to leaving the UK.

Yes, it isn't looking good. Scotland did get the consent of the UK government though and it doesn't look as if they are going to support Catalonia.

Jaycee5 there's a lot of salty people (mainly politicians) who didn't want Catalunya to get Independence but they did after all. They deserve to have it their way.

Rockman People are using negative language like nationalism but I don't see a desire to preserve their own language, culture etc. as something negative. Small isn't always bad but I think Spain will be harsh with them.

Jaycee5 Exactly! For example, in 2018 I plan on visiting Japan (gotta plan where to go, visit and my budget) as I love their culture, people and entertainment (not a huge fan of raw fish but do eat, not too often). The Japanese keep everything traditional; their houses, streets, clothes, music, country don't change regardless of how many years it may pass.

The term/word 'Nationalism' has been heavily used in negative connotation but nationalism just means wanting to keep your country together, your people safe, keep traditional values instead of having it replaced with stuff that makes no sense and so on.

Just walking around in Japan will make the trip well worth it. 🙂

Rockman It sounds like an amazing trip. You should start a chat thread so we can keep up with your adventures. I toured Italy last autumn and the memories will last a lifetime. Travelling and experiencing new cultures, foods and trends are key to me.

In in terms of ’nationalism’ that is a word banded about in a very negative way. And, I fear that Brexit has ignited lots of debate and not always in a positive way. For the UK there are interesting times ahead...
