Charitable Work

My work allow us to volunteer one work day a month and be paid for it.

I'm looking for ideas on what I can do, Iv tried local homeless centre but was limited in what I could do.

Also volunteered in a hospice making tea but found it too upsetting.

Age Concern are always needing volunteers for visiting elderly folk who never get out and have no family. You need not commit to loads of time and it just involves conversation although you could play games, do jigsaws etc.

MumOfThree Age Concern has a social side too. You will get emails inviting you to quiz nights, meals etc. I have given a few history talks to their Tuesday Club members.

What a fantastic idea. You could try searching on facebook for local charitable groups - we have lots in our area; all registered charities but smaller and much more in need of volunteers. Acts of Kindness is a nice one which may be nationwide? Animal shelters always seem to want volunteers.

Thanks some good ideas, I'm very lucky my work lets us do this. I would prefer local charities rather than a big one

I hadn't heard of this until I saw your post - I found that it seems permissable (perhaps with only some employees) for that day to be used raising money for donating to charity. If you have some skill that can earn money, this could be a way that you could help some charity - without direct involvement.

My own skills can earn much more than me volunteering my services would be worth and it's what I've actually done since retirement.

Hope this helps if your employee is one who allows your day to be used in this way. You might find it overlapping with other days though.

This might be of interest to you and others https://www.glassdoor.co.uk/blog/time-off-volunteer/

If you are any good at form filling then charities like Marie Curie or even your local hospices ask people to visit the families of deceased to help with paperwork. For some fresh air try Cinnamon where you can walk dogs for people with restricted movement ... or your local rescue centre. Adopt a small area in your neighbourhood and keep it clear of litter. Contact any local charity you have an interest in and I am sure they will be thrilled with anything you can do. Great that you want to do something proactive. Good luck👍

Wow, that’s amazing! We only get 4 days a year for volunteering.

It depends on what you’re interested in, I worked for a big charity for three years and every Monday we had a volunteer who worked on financial data - same job as people there who were getting paid but she was retired and just wanted to help out every week while she could. Could be worth speaking to any local offices (if there are some) I’m sure they’re grateful for any kind of help :-)
