Charity? Where's Your Money Going?

There are so many charities that are misusing funds claiming they are for a particular thing and then diverting the money somewhere else that I will not support any of them.

This is, of course, notwithstanding the fact that many of the bosses went on holidays with these donations, they want to be the bosses in order to fleece the charities.

It's not for me these days and hasn't been for a long while...

I think it is better to support local community groups and food banks.

Sadly, I given up on donations unless it is to local community projects or shelters. The major sites are not transparent. Living on the coast our family has always supported the RNLI until I found out last year that they send money abroad and yet there are still TV ads requesting money to help local branches and they'd cut 130 jobs. I was disappointed because a relative was assured that the thousands they'd donated would go directly to our area branch. Clearly, the representative who made a house visit was economical with the truth. (if it's in the smallprint of the Annual Report there's no need to bring it to the donor's attention!)

Then this headline swiftly brought my shutters down 'Racists have stopped donating to the RNLI because money goes abroad'. How insulting!

I tend to support local charities or those that are important to us. We donate to the childrens charity at Glasgow Royal Sick Kids as they did our sons operation, we donate to Ronald McDonald house because it is where we stayed when our son was in the hospital, we donate to the Zak Braveheart foundation because they look after kids with heart conditions when in the hospital and once at home and they helped our son and our friends daughter and we donate to the Simpsons Special Care Babies because they paid for the special ambulance and equipment that transported our son from Edinburgh to Glasgow for his operation the day he was born. These charities have helped us when we really needed it, so they are important to us and we help them when we can and my husbands best friend does a fundraiser for the Glasgow hospital childrens charity each year.

I support the now CLIC Sargent, the forerunner to this (the Sargent Fund) supported my niece and family when she was diagnosed with leukemia age 9 and supported us all through her first round of treatment and later bone marrow transplant. They were there for her until she was 21 when she was 'discharged' from young adults. Pleased to say she is doing really well now age 40

Lots of air ambulance ads on at the moment made me think of your post. Very worthy charity and I have no problem with them per se but was surprised to see that they are asking for £3 for which they will send you a helicopter pin badge. Thinking of the cost of the postage and pin, then any admin costs, it left me wondering how much of the £3 actually gets to the charity.

Does any adult donating really want any part of their gift spent on a helicopter pin?
