I'm not sure, but just did a Google search and it came up with, Copeland, a borough in Cumbria, has been crowned the most affordable place to live in the UK

Copeland?!

Lies, damn lies and statistics.

I found an article on Zoopla about the Top 10 most affordable places to live.

In all the Top 10 most affordable places to live (2016) the average annual wage was between £19,000 and £21,000. That is all except for Copeland, Cumbria in first place.

The average annual wage in Copeland is £37,500. Copeland comes second only to London in a survey of average weekly earnings. A report by the Office for National Statistics found that workers in West Cumbria have earnings comparable to the City of London and Westminster.

Why so? Because Copeland is home to the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing site, which employs over 10,000 people. Over half the UK’s nuclear workforce is employed at Sellafield, so it’s a magnet for highly skilled engineers, with salaries to match.

What this means is that the House price to wage ratio in Copeland is just 3 (i.e. the average house price there (£114,000) is only three times the average salary (£37,500). Which makes Copeland appear very affordable. But in reality it isn't. Unless you are one of those highly skilled engineers with a big salary. Lies, damn lies and statistics!

Better then to look at the other places in the Top 10 where the average house price is approx £75,000 to £100,000 and the House price to wage ratio is 4 to 5.

Dunno about Essex but after seeing this short video, it has made me want to visit it sometime in the near future.

London is overpopulated. I simply prefer calm, rural and parts of countries with few to a moderate amount of people.

I think it depends on your wages as well as house prices etc. It also depends on what area of a town you live in. For example, there are certain areas in Edinburgh that are cheaper than others, same as any town. I think it also depends on what you view as cheap and what you can afford. There is no one place that is going to be affordable for everyone.

In there you'd end up paying by other means than money.
