Should Christmas Crackers Be Banned?
Ask a Question
They are bad for the environment, and now Waitrose and John Lewis have announced they have banned plastic toys in Christmas crackers
I think I might miss the fun of pulling one, and perhaps the silly jokes, but I can leave the rest of the Xmas cracker experience
I'm not a fan of banning things. Although, the plastic toys do tend to end up in the bin. You could always replace it with a small chocolate bar or some sweets
It makes sense to replace plastic tat that ends up in the bin. I agree with replacing it with toffee or chocolate
I only buy them out of tradition. Not sure I will bother this year. It's all a bit daft really... Xx
I don't think that you should keep on banning things, there is far too much government regulation already.
People can be sensible if alternative suggestions are made and enjoyed such as putting trial size / free samples of hand lotion, perfume etc inside crackers - especially if you make your own crackers. Even a rolled up lottery ticket/scratch card - it could be a nice win for the receiver! (Of course children would need something other than a lottery ticket) Imagination is the key.
I always buy them and we marvel at how rubbish they are. I really should make my own if I could muster the time and energy!!! Xx
Ceebers That's it, time is needed and it is always in such short supply when Christmas is approaching.
Ah yes that’s a great idea! I do t think I’ve made a homemade cracker since I was a kid, so it’s definitely the kind of thing I ought to try out again. thanks
Yes about time too, they should stop filling crackers with rubbish plastic toys. I tend to buy more expensive ones so at least the item might be worth keeping. I’m still using nail clippers from a Christmas cracker I pulled years ago and a keyring.
That’s true. I recall seeing some really premium crackers in fortnum and mason being reduced to a fraction of its original price, and the gifts inside were indeed worth the reduced price tag. I still never bought them as I think they’re still too expensive lol
It's a good idea to reduce the amount of useless plastic but they could just change what the put in them. Or sell eco friendly kits to make your own. I don't like outright banning of things with no good reason.
Totally agree. I fill them each year with relevant gifts and the recipients are really surprised to get something other than an oversized paperclip.
I don't agree with banning them as I think we are getting far too many bans and choices made for us. Replace the plastic with sweets by all means but I do think the kids love the little bits of tat at Christmas, lol
Lol I’m sure it’s not just the kids who love the tat - us big kids also love it. I guess it brings back nostalgia, good memories
The plastic toys are rubbish anyway, so no loss there. I don't think banning crackers is a good idea though - just put better (or more environmentally friendly) stuff in them!
How will people survive Christmas without a plastic moustache or a fortune telling fish? Loads of places sell cracker kits now and are often cheaper than the value ones, plus you can tailor it to yours and your families needs, don't make the mistake we have done in the past though, put in mini bottles of spirits and then get to enthusiastic with your pull and end up having the house smell of gin for weeks from the smashed bottle
The trouble with banning anything is that it immediately becomes more desirable. Hence the rise of the black market. Someone somewhere will supply the need.
However, it would be good if manufacturers did not use any plastic in them.
The manufacturers just need to change the materials they use so that it is not as bad. Everything we do impacts something and someone, so at least the retailers are taking things into consideration
I always thought it would be great filled with sweets...
I think wrapping papers are bigger problems for the environment, but I believe not the customer should be punished with taxes when the companies make the same bad things and give u no option or the better option is much more expensive than the other one.
Am I the only person who doesn't see a problem with plastic?
Sure, it isn't exactly good for the environment yada yada... but I think the problem lies with people not being bothered to reuse it or recycle it. Plastic itself is very versatile and is convenient. Again, the problem lies with people.
